i use edge guns, they are quality but your gona pay for it. for a 1.4m i pay about $400.
rabitech make good guns and also freedivers. (both are south african mechanisms)

if your gona spend big then buy a rob allen or an aimrite....

if your gona be using it for just reef fish then a 1.1m will be fine.

if your planning on shooting pelagics then a 1.4 is a must with a reeel aswell..

if your going to buy a reel id highly recommend the aussiereels. they are built solid and are only $150...

My bro has an superfrog/edge 1.4 and its great and not too expensive.

This guy: does cheap Freedivers gear.

Try for cheap aimrite (he is in Cottesloe) and shooting lines and floats.

Wombat at Hookah Dive has some gear available too.

I would probably recommend a floatline and float for pelagics. They have to come up eventually right?

Aussie reels are also know as paxman reels IIRC.

Had a freedivers 1400 fo a while now, cant say i like its accuracy and general feel. Have a picasso carbonito 1000, love it! Would prob go a rob allen tuna or sparid if i had to get a new one.

 have had problems with the safety jamming, after talking to some mates that are heavy into spearing they say its a common problem with this mechanism....easily fixed by removing the safety, not ideal IMO but as they say, the only safety on a spear gun is having slack rubbers 

free divers make nice quiet and cheap guns. rob allens are good too. but my fav is the rabbitech :) a good brand new carbon will set u back 380 bucks if bought from south africa. awesome guns very light and accurate. also the edge guns have a good rep and are like un breakable, and aussie made. alot of ppl have had some hipe about the aimrites, but i reckon they cost wayyyy to much for what they are

 Aimrite guns are well made and come in varying models from Ali to Bluewater carbons with prices to match the models.  They have a life time warranty which I don't think you will find anywhere else so if you want a quality Aus made gun that is going to lasted then have a look at them. The SuperVenom range is a solid gun that will stop most fish in our waters 

I have a brand new never seen water, Freedivers EVO Reel gun....  1.1m... With loaded reel obviously..  $350 plus postage..

Im located in Carnarvon so postage shouldnt be too much if yoiure keen...

1.1 is an excellent all round size for someone starting out...

 thats a great deal that Dooma is offering you mate and is exactly what you need. You will be surprised what you can shoot with a 1.1 My Dad has shot Macks, Dhuies, Baldies, Trout, Spangos, KGW and other fish with his 1.1m.

get a riffe euro 1300. ive been the owner of many guns rob allan, cressi mohawk an omer an the riffes

are way way better. there double wrap shooting line so you have way more range than them other poxy guns an 

there well balanced with the double rubbers but really powerfull an accurate at the same time.

ive shot both pelagics an demersals with mine. you be silly to go with any other gun.

I have a rob allan tuna and am very happy with it. I have the 1.1 and have used it on reef species and mackies...

Ive got a omer caymen ET 115 the other week, used it twice so far and am really happy with it.

Very acurate and has heaps of punch pulls a few meters of cord of the reels with the drag turned up

A Riffe will cost you a bit but it will be the best money you spend. I have a Riffe Euro 1100 and am still stunned by its accuracy. I used to use Rob Allen Sparid 1200 and it was a good gun but not even in the same league as the Riffe.
They are really well balanced and 'swim' really well when being towed behind the boat.
I agree with Josh in that they pack plenty of punch (accurate to about 6m) without getting any 'drop' in the spear.

theres plenty of good guns out there man, just get whatever feels comfortable, but two words of advice if your new to it, stay away from carbon unless your going bluewater. carbons strong and light but if you bang it or drop it the carbon can crack or shatter. mate had a 140 carbon leaning against the console, took a wave on the side, boat rolled, gun hit the deck and snapped in half!! leave the carbon for fishing rods.

also if your going to the monties your obviously gonna be diving around reef etc, get something you can fit into holes and under ledges etc!

iv got a cressi mohawk 110. had it for 4 years, never missed a beat, get it into tight spots for trout, blues etc, and shot mackies and wahoo with it too!

I just ordered a Rob Allen Zulu Carbon Railgun 130cm, Looking forward to getting it in the water for the first time. I will post what it is like once I have taken it out a couple of times but I think the rule of thumb is you get what to pay for and everyone will have a different opinion other wise we would all have the same gun and there wouldn't be any real choice. For me because I am a crap diver and I don't spend much time looking under leadges etc I tend to just attack from above so the extra lenght was important.

 Hi I use a Pelaj Specker railgun, they are great and all you really need. On mine I have two 16mm bands which provide tons of power for the bigger fish.

They are not very cheap $350 but are great quality and would be worth investing in

$350 for a spekter ??????  MATE.. you got RIPPED!!!!!!!  You can get Nemesis for that... cheaper again even on ebay!!!!

I bought a spektor for $220.(ages ago).. And promptly sold it and upgraded to a freedivers...   I used to have a Pelaj Kanji but it was way overkill with 3 rubbers for what I do....  also not a fan of the open muzzels.. If I ever HAD to have a Pelaj again.. Id go the nemesis with the upgraded handle!

i bought a pelaj spekter 140 from adreno on sale for$129....sorry brother but you got ripped at $350...

+1 for Riffe spearguns.

Have owned and used all sorts of guns over the years in particular RA, Aimrite, Beauchat, Cressi, Freedivers, Omer, Undersee and Edge and they all worked great and got the job done. The key to a great gun is having the buoyancy dialed in perfect with a comfortable handle and not under or over powering the gun with rubbers.

My favourite all round gun by far is the Riffe Euro 120x. Build quality is top notch, trigger mech is really overengineered so you never have to worry about it misfiring. Whole gun is balanced really well with lots of power and I can honestly say ive never shot a more consistantly pin point accurate gun straight out of the box.

Also love the fact that after years of tough love you can give it a quick sand and rub down with teak oil + some new rubbers and you've got yourself a brand new gun again. You pay a little extra initially but they are tough as nails and will last a lifetime.

If I was starting all over again spearing Pilbara based I would go a Riffe Euro 120x, 2x 16mm rubbers, 7.1mm spear and a reel.

Had a 120 then sold it to a bloke from down south also omer hf both shit hot guns but get the riffe if you can afford it

Rob allen, rabitech, freedivers, orcs etc are all pretty similar... similar mechs similar ideas.

Riffe and aimrite use a different form of mech and are a bit different.

Thoughts to consider...

The clarity of the water and how close you normally get to your fish...

Around the reef I use a 110cm railgun with a single 18mm or 20mm rubber and a 7mm single flopper spring steel shaft.

Offshore with reasonably clear water i use a 1300 railgun with single 18mm or 20mm rubber and a 7mm single flopper spring steel shaft.

I generally spear offshore so the 1.3m gun is my work horse... it's still reasonably manouverable which is handy for tracking and keeps it easy to swim around with.

The single 18mm or 20mm rubber I find useful as it allows me to reload quite quickly... stay away from double wraps... more often then not if the fish is that far away your kidding yourself and it takes a great deal longer to reload if you miss and the fish is still around.

The above will handle trout to marlin.

If you have awesome clear water and you need more range then the single wrap will offer... look at a dedicated blue water gun with 3 or more rubbers and a shaft over 8mm... you can set it up with a nice slip tip and all the rest... more often then not you will still be reloading whiler everone else uses a single or double rubber railgun... on heavy bodied fish lke big tuna the extra punch of these heavy shafts can be worth the trade off however.

Plenty of answers! All pretty much correct. It comes down to how much you want to spend. A good railgun (ali) with a spare shaft should cost under $500.

Personally I would consider the picasso/torelli/edge/aimrite HD guns the picks. Reason being is that they have a slightly thicker barrel (32mm vs 28mm), a range of muzzle options and rubber configurations (single or twin rubbers) and good quality trigger mechanisms.

Try to find a second hand one if you want to save some money, the only things that wear is rubbers and rigging really as long as you dont mind a few scratches.

Riffe are great but probably not necessary as a first gun, the open muzzle "can" be a bit tricky for new spearos (are you new or done some spearing with mates etc?). KISS principle applies.

Length wise I would consider a 1.2 or 1.3 if your tall/strong. :-) Also go a floatline first up, reels are good but can cause more trouble at times if not managed correctly.
