0.05 Imminent?

Lots of 14y Olds are gonna be doing their RST soon I reckon.
Personally I think it's a good thing as being >0.05 is pointless when I have to drive home anyways and there's some truely pissed units that should be in charge of a boat but could possibly have pushed it to 0.08.

I have a question regarding
I have a question regarding the RST. I hold a current Master Unlimited certificate, issued by AMSA, this allows me to be legally in charge of any size vessel, worldwide.
To attain this cert it take many years at sea and several lengthy schooling periods. To keep this cert valid you must do a fire fighting and survival at sea, every 5 years.
The other day I was informed that I must hold an RST to skipper my 6.2 metre ali boat.
I find this a bit of an insult and so far have resisted getting an RST.
I think AMSA and WA Marine Safety are having a "Whos got the biggest dick competition".
Any thoughts?

Seems a bureaucratic technicality
I agree, especially given your experience and quals as a Master. At the opposite end of the quals scale I have had a Commercial Coxswain's ticket for decades, still current and originally issued by WA then later by AMSA as a nationally recognised qual. I was used to running around in 5-8m boats taking small teams of people to remote areas for work, so I thought when the RST was introduced the ticket should be OK for using my 5.2m centre console for pleasure. However was told by Dept Transport that my commercial qual would not cover recreational use. Not sure why, but I didn't want to be without a legal qualification. So, I reluctantly took my papers to Dept Transport and they issued me an RST immediatley, after taking a fee.... Nuts, but what can you do. At least it was issued in perpetuity, although that could change, as that's what happened with my commercial ticket, which was issued in perpetuity but later changed to 5 year renewals.

Mine was issued
Mine was issued automatically, haven't seen it for years though.
The downside of them being connected would be if you fuck up and lose that then both gone

Same in every state
You need a recreational licence in every state; WA is no different (not withstanding the other comment about NT).
Regardless, your Master Unlimited is recognised as an equivalent qualification and you don't need to do the course - just submit the paperwork.

Yes, I was told to surrender
Yes, I was told to surrender my old ticket and get the RST, did pay a fee too. Now I think I should've kept the old one, but pushing 70, too old to worry.

Maybe not connected?
I have no idea if the RST and an AMSA quals are connected at the beaureucratic level but seems unlikely. You deal with them seperately to get the commercial or state licences and the rules for what each one lets you do are different. I don't think AMSA would know or care if you had an RST and clearly WA thinks the RST is something you have to have for rec boating here, regardless of whatever AMSA commercial quals you have, even though they recognise them. So, maybe whatever happens with one has no affect on the other?

Political suicide but..
Definitely unpopular to change the status quo, but might be time to find a way to get better info on rec fishing there. See today's news article on Darwin fishing concerns; https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-21/golden-snapper-stocks-depleted-darwin-but-dont-mention-licences/104628860

You've always needed to
You've always needed to travel well outside Darwin if you want to catch good Goldie's. Never really been renowned for them close to town.

Unpopular opinion though I
Unpopular opinion though I dont have a problem with it but in saying that, I will rarely have more than a couple of beers when we are out and about.
In the past, when sailing, we would get a skin full and sleep on the boat but nowdays, being hungover with the kids still wanting to do stuff early in the morning is a punishment on top of a punshiment.
If you are a knob and draw attention to yourself by disturbing people out having a good time and putting others at risk then you should cop the sharp end of the stick. If you are just doing your thing and living within the rules then there is no problem.

It's not a problem for me
It's not a problem for me Paul as I never drink out on the boat, I want my wits about me especially up north.
We just get into them when the boat's back on the trailer while filleting. And it's literally 50m for me to park the boat up, winning.

Don't really drink on boats
Don't really drink on boats until the day is over. If I'm moored at Rotto I might have a beer with lunch but never really start until late afternoon/eraly evening when there is no chance I'll need to move the boat. I see people incapable of driving their boats before lunchtime. Okay if you're the mooring licensee or a registered user but if you get bumped off you want to be in a state to skipper safely.

drinking
Any one that wants to drink on a boat especially out wide ahould try swimming fifty meters sober then try it after 5 stubbies with or without a jacket. When things go belly up it happens real quick.

I umpired a school footy carnival then hung around for 3 VB's (country footy lol) then went to my own training. It was not pretty and I was yacking my guts up during the first drill.

No issues for me . I don't
No issues for me . I don't allow any alcahol on my boat by anyone . Unfortunately many people do go a bit overboard when they are out there . Watching a lot of you tube fishing shows it seems drinking is a very common practice. Makes you wonder what would happen if things went pear shaped out there.
Skipper should be at a zero alcahol .

Interesting to see the state
Interesting to see the state prosecution has dropped the case against the bloke who was charged for driving the boat down in Mandurah after witnesses swore he wasn't driving the boat.
My question is who was. Witnessess say it was another bloke not him. Maybe more to come on this one.
