Kayak for a big bloke
Submitted by bigdavet86 on Mon, 2012-01-30 10:23
I am looking to get into a bit of kayak fishing to help me lose a few kg's and get into shape. Problem is i am a big dude, tipping the scales at around 140kg and about 6'4" tall. Is there a yak out there suitable for me? I would prefer a paddle one, mainly because of the cost. Obviously it will need to be something failry stable, cos when i shift around on it, its a bit more weight than usual throwing the COG around and i dont wanna go in the drink to often. Be good to hear from any other big fellas on a kayak.
Thanks in advance.

Depends on the $$$ you have to spend
I've been on a Hobie Pro Angler for the last year and a bit, it's like a small boat and can be a handful when transporting on a roof rack but would more than likely float you well.

Hey Dave.
Sounds like I've been cut from a smiliar mould, maybe an extra inch or two and a few less kilos.
I've got an Ocean Kayak Frenzy that is pretty good. Cheap as chips, really stable. Not the fastest yak on the water, but I guess you lose speed for stability. They are listed at up to 150kg, but I reckon they'd handle a bit more.
There is a yak shop up in Mindarie that did us a really good deal, also let us borrow a couple for the morning to see what we thought of them.
They are about 20kg in weight, so pretty easy to carry around, and throw up on the roof racks.

Same Boat
Hey Dave,
I have a hobie pro angler 12 raised seat with a heap of leg room! Lots of dollars looking at 4k for set up. I am 6"4 and 115kgs and I couldn't roll it if I tried, I know blokes who weigh more and use them, they also rated to like 200 + Kgs.
