Heads up
G'day,
I have recently purchased a 1976 Baron Sportsman 5.6 with a 85 johnson outboard (buggered) and was trying to get some information in regards to doing it up!
I have had the hull checked out by a reputable boat builder and it all appears to be in good structural order, the floor is a bit spongy between the supports and a few gel coat cracks on the port side from jetty bouncing.
I was thinking of upgrading the 1976 johno with a 115 evinrude e-tec, hydrolic steering, a dual battery system, new radio's and a general big tidy up, new windows etc. Basically as it sits i have a good trailer and hull.
As there is so much information out there i am trying to get a non biest salesman heads up as a few dollars will be spent, I want to do it right the first time and get the information from people who know what they are talking about instead of salesman seeing dollar signs. Achieving a strong reliable boat is what i am trying to achieve.
Some believe that the 90 e-tec evinrude will be ample horse power as the 115 is really the max hp for the boat and others believe a 130 suits the boat.
The boat will be used for offshore fishing mainly and young family boating trips.
Anybody with info or things to look out for would be greatly appreciated.
Have a good one.

a 90 hp i would think would
a 90 hp i would think would be good and a definate on hydraulic steering, i would look at the 4stroke or e-tech, as the e-tech are sposed to be good. just do your homework or give men on boats a call as they are sponsors and have given others on here great deals, they could help out with everything you need to know

115
I would go for the 115 etec, that will give you the bit extra if needed and better fuel economy as the motor won't be working hard compared to the 90.
As for the radio go for a VHF and not a 27meg,it may cost a bit more but for the improved range ,clarity etc its money well spent.

Ive got a 115 yamaha
Ive got a 115 yamaha 2006 on my voyager, same size as your baron and its a 1979 hull.It had a full structual repair about 18months ago including new floor and foam filled hull with beefed up stringers , I would say the 115 would be enough in the etec, i would expect at least 35 knots top speed, and my cruises at 21knots at 4000rpm. I also have twin batteries, Vhf, cd player, deck wash, live bait tank, furuno 620, and Chartplotter. And have just added a fold down rocket launcher and bimni with front and side clears. On the wish list is a full respray and hydrolic steering.

Go for the 115. by the time
Go for the 115. by the time you load the boat up with fuel, bait, eskies tackle and a mate or two you will appreciate the extra power. The 90 &115 usually are the same engine in terms of weigh Any way.
This article does a comparison between suzuki, yamaha and e-tec.

Thanks for everyone's input
Thanks for everyone's input much appreciated, i think i will have a chat with men on boats and take it from there, after some feed back i think the 115 e-tec is the best option, compatibility and value wise.
Any thoughts on reliable hydrolic steering brands??

I'd go the Yamaha 100hp
I'd go the Yamaha 100hp fourstroke , unless your really chasing power then maybe a little bigger. The 115 four stroke is heavier but the boat will still handle it. As for ETEC sorry seen too many issues..But thats your call. I like Seastar hydraulic steering, must be bull horn.
BUT do you really want to upgrade with a brand new motor, allot of money can be saved for going for a few year old donk and honestly if you don't keep the boat long term at least 3 years you will finacially be worse of with new in th elong run.
I don't sell any outboards new, used or even new boats , but i am baised to brands becuse some are simply better than others This is my opinion after over 17 years of boating industry experaince..

Thanks Rod
G'day Rod,
Thanks for your reply mate, this is the sort of info i am chasing.
What sort of issues have you seen with the e-tecs, i have only heard good reports but that was coming from salesman who are trying to flog me one. I do plan on keeping the boat longer than 3 years but looking at a second hand motor does make sense.
Thanks again for your comments Rod.
Cheers mate.
