Your favourite lure

Just wondering what everyone's favourite lure is, be it for bream, trolling for big stuff, poppers etc.. The one that's caught that fish of a lifetime or one that you think will in the future..

Mine would have to be the jnr tornado lures or hockzheads - favourites would have to be the ones with the little metal heads and brightly coloured skirts.
Whats yours?

my favourites would have to be snapbacks and squiggy flick baits, for trolling tornados and hockzheads along with rickter pushers. As far as poppers go it would have to be the river to sea dumbell poppers they just throw so much water.

For me it probably comes down pretty easily to one lure, a rapala GFR CD18. Dont know what it is about this lure but for mackies it is absoultely deadly. Giant tremblers are also high up there in choice

gully,

i can vouch for the beloved GFR, great lure. sedducitve wobble combined with a high visibility organge. the first colours to be lost with depth in order are ROYGBIV. red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. within the depths the rapala dives to, orange stands out like a dogs proverbials.

however, my favourite lures, in terms of productivity (as opposed to joy of useage) would have to be metal slices.

the original abu toby is my favourite lure. sexy side to side shimmy, plenty of shiny chrome, and the red flecks. versatile lure that. bouncing off the bottom, slow retrieve, fast retrieve, high-rod tip popper-style fast retrieve across the surface, stop start retrieve, whatever you want.

for sheer species list domination, the ol toby is hard to beat.

Red/White CD18 & Blue/Silver CD14

Fri, 2006-07-28 19:51

These lures have been the benchmark for me for a fair while. I've just started experimenting (briefly) with the new rapala x-rap 30 magnums (black/silver). I say briefly as it caught a wahoo after its first 10 minutes in the water, and then 5 mins after that wen't missing on an even larger wahoo.

Anybody else have any feedback on the new x-raps?

I've got heaps and heaps of lures but these are the main goto lures....

Metals: 20gm silver twisty
Popper: Gillies 12cm weighted popper
Soft Plastics: Berkley bass minnow in pearl watermelon
Minnows: Laser Pro 190 chrome pink for the big ones and Nilsie 12cm in blue for the small stuff.
Heavy metal (jigging): 12" spanner!!

RE: X-Raps. The big ones are awesome slow troll lures.....swims straight out of the box and bloody sharp VMC trebles......you can troll from 4knots to 8knots......altho mine hasnt picked up any fish yet.....well didnt land any......they are by far the best lure.....if only they come in chrome pink!!

Speed Kills

Sat, 2006-07-29 09:57

You need to crank your speed up Honsu when dragging x-rap 30's and magnums. The quicker the better, as long as they are not blowing out of the water.

I found these lures aren't compatible with crazy deeps as the slower speed drastically reduces the effectiveness of the x-raps etc.

I use to troll a mix of deeps and magnums but know I troll fast or slow (not medium). Trolling lures like any type of fishing, is a confidence game in my opinion.

Favourite Lure

Sat, 2006-07-29 12:05

I have a average supply of lures (Metals,Bibbed,Soft Plastic ect)but my FAVOURITE that always works on shallow reef is a unweighted mulie on a set of gang hooks (3/0 4/0 Tarpons).I troll the Mulie at about 5 - 8 knts and always hook up on something.

Minnows, Pushers and jigs

Sat, 2006-07-29 20:37

With the minnows i have to say the Halco crazy deep. Seem to always pick up a few fish on these lures. Mainly in the gold colour.
Also cant go past a no name purple, black and silver 12inch pusher i have. Got it off a mate and have caught more marlin with it than any other lure i have.
Also into the S.W Jigs in the 300grm - 470grm range. Sambos love them.

Toby Lures

Sun, 2006-07-30 21:34

I'm with you on that one Matt, I've been fishing Toby lures since the late seventies and they have accounted for plenty of fish. I still reach for it in tailor country out of choice rather than just habit.

I would love to do a bit of a retrospective between modern day metal slices and the old Toby lure and a few other metal comparissons such as the old Assassin and Coffin lures we used to chuck out from the North Mole in the early eighties versus some of the raiders and Gillies lures I prefer to use today. I wonder what the results of a side by side cast by cast effort would be between the two genre's.

Cheers

yeah, thanks for the reply

Sun, 2006-07-30 22:05

yeah, thanks for the reply andy, its always a change when people actually agree with me!

yeah those tobies really kick it don't they. i have a handful of originals and am torn between using them, and just retiring them for outstanding service. my old man got me onto them, and i just love them.

compared to the metals of today, tobies exhibit a much sexier wobble than the slice/raider ilk.

the extra wobble allows you to slow the retrive right down whilst maintaining action. i particularly like how they can suspend and flutter when pausing a retrieve in say a backwash or shore break. i have stared agog watching fish suck them down from such stationary flutter.

the only negative i casn think of is they don't cast as far as a modern slice. being a spoon, they really catch the wind and can get out of hand. i guess it depends on whether you need that extra 20m to reach the fish.

anyone played around with the non-original version slices?

Yeah I have seen you with those tobies in action up in Exmouth. Clean up was an understatement as live baits and all other lures went untouched queenies were lining up for that toby.

Was bloody good to watch

Thu, 2006-08-03 00:37

For Bream, to me, you'd have to at least have a few River2Sea Baby Vibes in you tackle box along with some Gulp Sandworms and NextOne Eyeball Tails. Don't limit yourself with jigs. Vary it up a bit, but a good rule of thumb is to go as light as possible. TT do a 1/40th HWS (hidden weight system) jig that is brilliant on Sandworms.

Halco Laser Pro 190....
Caught everything from Mangrove Jacks to Sailfish on them...
CD18's are as good....but don't hold up to extreme punishment like the Laser Pro. An essential lure for bluewater trolling.
The first lure I ever caught a fish on was an Abu Toby...9 barra in a session to 15lb when I was 13...I like them too!

Trolling - Laser Pro 190 DD or XDD
Poppers - Rooster 105s and 135s
Metal - W-w-w-woblers always done well for me on tailor and herring. Raiders for bigger fish.
Softies - Any of the snapback range
Jigs - Searocks up north then SWLAB knives down here.
