Transom wedge for outboard mounting?

Hey all, looking for some advice from knowledgeable types regarding mounting the outboard on my project boat. When i bought the boat it had an 80s 90hp Johnson on it, and in addition to a piece of ply transom packing, there was a wooden wedge between the motor and transom. it was about 2 inches wide at the top end and i assume that it was used to allow more 'negative trim' on the outboard possibly due to the boat riding bow-high or struggling to get on the plane? anyway,i will hopefully soon be mounting the late 90s 90hp Honda 4st that i have bought for it and i am wondering if i will need to use the same set up or if the Honda may have a greater trim range? anyone know much about these wedges?
