securing your boat to the trailer

Hi guys, was out around east freo last night when I came across an unlucky guy who's sundancer 245 had slid off his trailer and was half sitting on the road with a lovely white mark extending for about  10 meters behind where it sat.

Let this be a reminder to us all to secure out boats properly. I didnt see it happen so I can't tell wether speed or the winch and safety chain  failing was the cause. I also couldnt tell wether the saftey chain was even attached.

Either way, an unfortunate end to the rotto swim for one family, and I would presume an expensive one.

Winch, safety chain, a turn buckle from the front of the boat to the frame of the trailer, to stop the boat moving forward if the winch post ever did fail and a strap at the back

On the front winch post

Sun, 2013-02-24 17:47

On the front winch post including the actual dynema winch rope and hook i have a chain and turn buckle to a shackle on the front eyelet of the boat. For the rear i have two lengths of chain(one for each side) inside an old bike tube(so no metal on metal) around each rear bollard to a turn buckle and shackle to an eyelet on each corner of the trailer. Used to use a strap but didnt like the rub marks it left on my bare ally boat surface. The chains inside bike tubes never move if done up tight enough :)

I use these one on either side of the rear of the boat.

Cheap security for around $40 from BCF.

They are rated to a weight and are easy to use.

I had them on my last glass boat (haines patriot).

No strap over the top, no ratchets and they are good as.

Nah not ratchet, they just snap down in the locked position and are very secure. The way the belt goes though the buckle it can't pop open so to speak. They are rated to certain weights, can't remember what weight maybe 2500kg??

From memory also they come in different lenghts, I cut mine and melted the ends on the belt. I was lucky enough to have anchor points on my trailer and boat and only needed short lenghts.

Very quick and easy!

Winch on the front and a turnbuckle chain (to trailerframe not winchpost) secures the front.  Have a couple of straps for each side on the transom but only use these for the 2km trip to the local ramp.  When on longer trips the tramsom is tied down with rope.  May look at getting some of those straps though as they are better than the ones I have.

Been there, done it

Having been the victim and depite years boating, I now am more pedantic than ever.

Upgraded Spectra, All rated U bolts, I dont knoe what it is but a double hook screw tight bar from Trailer (not winch bar) to front boat hook, truck tie to back (2.5T Rated)

This wont happen again.
