steering issues

howdy all

As i said yesterday in my fishing report, i lost the  steering 8kms out. i had a quick look this morning, i am able to turn steering wheel and the cable goes in and out from the helm but no movement at motor end with cable disconnected, what would thus suggest a broken cable or helm is stuffed. i replaced both about 18 months ago.

                                                                                             cheers

Your Cable

Has snapped IMO, take yourt old one out and replace, getting the old one out is the hard part commpared with putting the new one in.

I found a replacement for mine at Witfords but most larger boating joints have some in stock. Once you have the old one out it should have some details on it. from memory length etc, 13ft 14ft

Steering Cable

Dakka if you have a look at my thread last week, i had the same prob, except I found out in my driveway not 8 ks out...ouch.

I'm only just handy, and I replaced both my helm and cable with the advice from the guys here, and also at Bias Marine in Claremont. They told me once you have the cable out if you cant grab the end of the cable and pull it through back and forth then the cable is stuffed. That being said they also advised me to replace my helm at the same time, cause if the cogs in your helm are not good they will stuff a new cable quickly, cost me around $230 for both.

Teleflex cables do stamp there own, the last 2 digits of the serial is your size as Brock O has said.

I was told the most common place for them to seize is the steering tube across the front of the motor, then you either snap the cable or sheer the helm cogs trying to get it to move. I used a long bolt to tap the old one through, then completely degrease and regrease the tube ready for the new one. If you go to youtube there is some great Yankee instructional videos on what to do.

Hardest part in getting the old one out and new one in is if you have the room space around your motor, the ram bar has to go through dead square, previous to me owning my boat they have checked out a square at the bottom of the rubber boot hole in my motor well so they could pass the ram bar through straight into the steering tube, otherwise you have to take your motor off they reckon to get the bar through, luckily I didn't have to do that.

Sh!t I cant believe I had some experience to maybe help someone.

Cheers.
