Mewstone Salmon
I did a solo launch yesterday (all deckies engaged) and decided to chase some Salmon as they have been around our Metro since before Easter. The initial target area was the shipping channel in Cockburn Sound where Gail and I had witnessed a large school the weekend before. When I arrived at a position north of Woodman Point I was met by a large school busting up bait fish. I decided to use the fly rod as I am keen to get one of these feisty fish on fly, but one cast and they all disappeared. I remained in the area for another hour even going as far as the Ammo Jetty without any success. Well it was going to be Mewstone even though I knew that the water was going to be busy with other keen anglers.
On arrival at Mewstone I was met by more than 30 boats and although it was busy, there was a sense of “organized chaos”. The Salmon were definitely on the chew and I often witnessed several boats with anglers hanging on to their rods as the “scaly torpedoes” tried throwing the lures. One boat even had three anglers hooked up at the same time and I stopped fishing for a while to watch them clamber over each other as their fish swam in various directions.
Gladly most anglers returned their fish back to the water ready to breed and fight another day.
See my experiences in the video below.

Thanks for the good video
Great to see the fish returned to the water so quick, this increases their chance of surviving to fight another day. There certainly were a few boats around, but it looked like they were giving each other plenty of room which is good to see.

Anchor?
Are you anchored or drifting?

Best to drift
Best to drift for two main reasons:
- allows other anglers to the same without having to start up every time they drift towards you if you are at anchor
- you are able to cover more water - the fish move around at Mewstone, allbeit within the area
Good luck, and return your fish if you can.

Sustainability
.....if you can. I believe in releasing fish so that our future generations can have the same pleasure of catching them. Don't get me wrong, my first two demersals will go into the esky unless I have a good supply at home. Some people just exercise their right to catch and take their limit and then give the fish away.
As some wise person once said "Limit your kill, don't kill your limit".

I'm keen to try, those thunderstrom days can be very calm and then change to crazy if a squal hits, only got a 14' runabout.

If you manage to get there
If you manage to get there with no one else like we did for a chunk of last Wednesday, anchoring is fine and the numbers are great. 30 boats is ridiculous! We have only fished there with around 7-8 other vessels, which was fine with everyone spread well apart all onto good fish drifting / slow trolling. Sick video mate, good fun day out !
