Exmouth - New Bundegi Boat Ramp

Have been told that a new boat ramp is going to be built at Bundegi in Exmouth. The old one was washed away by a cyclone. Has anyone else heard anything ? Also told that after they finish that one that Tantabiddi will be upgraded. Heading up there in May next year and wondering if they will be built by then

I was up there last year and as usual the condition of the ramps was talked about. I recon someone could make a living at tantabiddi by using a tractor to launch and retrieve and charge say $5 or $10 a time. Hell I would pay that just to get the idiot in front of me out of the water before the tide has gone out compleatley and I can't get my boat out.
Maybe instead of spending 1 or 2 million on a ramp that will eventually get washed away they could employ someone with a tractor full time . Sometimes the simple things work best.

exmouth ramps

I was in Exmouth last july and then again a couple of months ago (Sept)When I was there in July the money for Bundegi was already approved, and they were suppose to start early 2006. When I was there 3 months ago the signs say it will be completed in 2007. The ramp is the easy part, its the groyne that needs to be done right. Without a groyne the sand washes in and covers the concrete in 2 days.In september they had signs up to not use Bundegi until the new ramp is done. Lets hope its done real soon, if not I will be buying a fourwheel drive and taking my own grates to put under the tyres. We used grates under the trailer this year at Tantabiddi and towed it with a Nissan Navara and had know problems. Mind you we made sure we didn't catch the bottom of the tide.

Out of interest what was the weather / wind like up there in September. I was up there Just after Gamex last year ( April) and it wasn't too bad off the west side for most of the time but when the South Westers blew it could get scary. Want to catch a bill fish but need good weather to get omongst them. Bundegi would give us the chance to fish both the west side and the gulf without having to change ramps half way through the day eg windy on the west means calm in the gulf and vice versa.

Paul,

First day was good, but from then on the south wester was in early all days. Two days we were the only boat out. Also swell kicked up a bit and water temp dropped.
When the swell came up and the water cooled the bait fish went deep, no surface action. Halco deep divers came to the rescue and ensured Mackies everyday.
Mainly fished the 100 to 120 metre line, but battled with the wind and swell. Still picked up plenty of fish but only one small red.
If your into whales thats the time, we saw more whales then you would want to, a couple of times while trolling we had to alter course as they were breaching right in front of the boat.
And lastly caught and saw alot more sharks then in July, not sure if the time of year has much to do with that?

exmouth ramp bundegi

Paul,

Have it on good advise that a contractor has been chosen to design
the ramp at Bundegi. Many ideas floated as to what sort of ramp. Rumour has it they may be looking at a steel mesh elevated ramp as a way to combat the sand build up that is common on concrete ramps. Believe work should begin sometime in January. Completion date unknown.
