Dhuie stomach surprise

My mate caught a small dhuie on my boat about a month ago, while gutting it he found one of those big eyed gobble guts fish inside it's stomach.

Just found it quite interesting, I've caught them before on small hooks, but never thought to send them back down as live bait, I will be next time tho!

what surprises have others found in the stomachs of dhuies?

Guts

Landed a big puka on light gear a few years ago and when we boated it found an angler fish in its mouth with the dangling light thing on its head , also caught a blackass that had just eaten a weedy sea dragon , shows anything goes !!

I caught a gummy shark a few weekends back that spat out a weedy sea dragon also, must be tasty critters!

 Haha yeah I think crays

Fri, 2020-03-27 18:28

Haha yeah I think crays would have to be the most common thing found in big dhuies mouths! Had a few larger dhuies cough ups chunks of crayfish onto the deck, pretty rank sometimes haha.

 Caught them before and they

Fri, 2020-03-27 11:58

Caught them before and they spewed up small fish and cuttlefish. If the fish is in good condition it goes straight on the hook. Also had them spew up fish that was a bit over ripe that I couldn't wait to get rid of as well. Seen them with crays  only half way down the throat

Yeah definitely mate, no point wasting good bait, especially if it's what they are eating at the time!

Western King Wrasse.......small ones

Fri, 2020-03-27 13:35

Are deadly bait, have seen many years ago three dhuies caught on the same small wkw whilst fishing in Jurien ......I actually go chasing them for bait and fillets of the larger ones also great for baldies. Even small red rock wrasse work great

Yeah definitely a favourite bait amongst dhuie hunters! No shortage of them on the 3mile while anchoring and burleying for pinkies!

Mate speared a nice dhue  a few years back that had a large cobbler in it's guts with the pectoral spines poking out of it a couple inches either side as if there not spikey enough.

You would be pretty unlucky

You would be pretty unlucky to get stuck by a cobbler spine while handling your dhuie haha.

Queen Snapper

Fri, 2020-03-27 15:47

Cut open the guts of every queen snapper you catch, they eat small shells , some of which can be quite valuable.

Have found stubbies in shark stomachs, lamb chop bones in a pink snapper, all sorts of weird things over the years

Dhues whole soft crays

Fri, 2020-03-27 21:27

Same as picture above big eye things, eels (lots) . Catfish ( back white ones) squid /occy /wrass. I would have to say cobbler/catfish and eels very common in dhues over the years in chasing them

Yep! Majority of mine have had a cobbler or eel in them. Or jam packed with crayfish fry, tiny clear ones. Even caught one once with a crayfish looking thing but it had big claws maybe the size of a big prawn but chunky nippers.

Don't be surprised at anything you find in their gut.

Sat, 2020-03-28 15:57

Doesn't need to be big dhu to scoff a 30cm long wrasse. Big pinks take them as well. But the most unusual one was the time I lost a livie. Son pulled up a big baldie not long after ( anchored), which spat out a wrasse head at the boat. The rest of the wrasse was in it's gut.  I alawys quietly laugh when I hear ground described as "wrasse ground", ie, meaning you won't catch a dhu there.

 them wrasse are dhuie candy

Sat, 2020-03-28 17:05

them wrasse are dhuie candy along with other hungry fish.

hooked a small wrasse on the top hook of a snelled rig and a few seconds later something bigger hooked up. 7 kg dhuie hooked on the bottom hook .

Hardest part about catching live bait like that

Sat, 2020-03-28 18:06

can be actually getting it up without getting smashed. Lost count of the number of bust-off's I've had catching livies when something bigger scoffs it. I actually try to catch them away from where I intend to fish, nowadays.

 It's a similar story when

Sat, 2020-03-28 21:28

It's a similar story when I'm anchor and burleying on the 3mile, the floaters wont get much attention, so I'll drop a small paternoster rig down hoping to catch some fresh bait, king wrasse etc, but end up having the target pinky or dhuie taking the cube of Mulie on a 1/0 hook and 20lb line haha, good fun when that happens!
