With whats happened over the past weeks with fish deaths I thought this would be a good read.

So many members....
So few answers....?
Good info, seems "industrial partners" dont get monitored for toxic dump in their areas on the Kwinana strip, water side?
Cheers,

Great (not great) read
So this indicates that the southern area of the Sound was "under stress" increasingly with plankton levels being elevated ............would love to see the monthly results for this year.
The seagrass die off has to cause concern as the same is happening at Jurien where there is little pressure and no industry as such - doesn't bode well for the future given these beds provide the breeding environment / nursery for many of our fish species
Thanks for posting - truly much appreciated

Yep, and when you look at it
Yep, and when you look at it over the years you can see why we just had the fish kills, it was not a case of if it would happen but when. Cockburn Sound is dying

Walfootrot, you are correct when you say Cockburn sound is dying. Like you I have have grown up in Rockingham, are you could see the weed banks, bait fish, crabs, snapper, bonito, molloway and diminish over the last 30 years.
The demise has had nothing to do with fishing pressure either, and can only be attritibuted to the water quality of the sound.
I knew a time when the weed covered most of the shallows from Mangles bay through to the Bulk jetty. Now it only gets up to Palm beach.
I will be at the rally on Saturday, to ensure my voice is heard and the politicians know we are serious about the life of our Sound. In fact Mr Mark McGowan best change his tune with regards to the Marina and Outer Harbour proposals, cause that would be the nail in the coffin for the Sound.

I remember those times as well
I have seen the destruction of Cockburn Sound which, IMO started with the dredging for shell grit by Cockburn Cement. That was the thin edge of the wedge Along with all the other industries that pumped their waste products into the sound "she'll be right" was the attitude then (and by some now)
I must apologise here and now for I have alluded in a couple of posts that the scientists at DoF weren't up to the task of finding the problem causing the deaths.
I was wrong.
I have a bad gut feeling we have witnessed the long term destruction of what was once a fantastic fishery, where big good eating fish (snapper) could be caught right at the door step of the metro area.
Vale Cockburn Sound.

Silver Lining.
If the deaths were indeed caused by an algal bloom, which could, at least in part, be caused by stagnant/poorly flowing water, then I cannot, for the life of me, see how the Rockingham marina development can go ahead.
I have no doubt that us rec fishos and anyone else who cares about the sound and its inhabitants will arc up big time if plans for this marina travesty persist. The big question is...will the big greenie groups step up to the plate and do the same? Governments/shires/industry/developers seem to listen to them...let's see them actually pursue something that doesn't smack of profit!

Yes this could have had an
Yes this could have had an affect, but IMO its not just one event or spill, its a combination of all the pressure put on the sound. It only took one small event to push it over the edge. Gov know what needs to be done to fix it..... $$$$$ & good management. do nothing and we will lose the sound

Yeah I agree, a lot of contributing factors with a couple of incident's within the same week pushing it all to the limit.
Just I had not heard about this particular incident until some time after it happened .

And they have known for years !
Read the long one last night - time for the Federal Gov to pay for the cost of adding several openings in the causeway or build a bridge and remove it completely !
They may well have got it right with the Cut at Mandurah but sure as hell they have known for over a decade that they got it wrong with the Causeway.
