Cervantes weekend > 18kg dhufish on jig!

With the Australia Day weekend coming up my cousin Jimmy (James Jordan) and I myself were talking Cervantes!

Jimmy's in laws have a house up there and I haven't fished Cervantes so we were excited to do some recon. I've fished Jurien & Leeman before and out wide of Cervantes but never in close!

The plan was to fish several days on my boat and rack up some spots (via recon) which I enjoy. Jimmy was keen also as he planned to fish the spots found with his boat at a later stage!

We caught plenty of dhufish as it was hard to get away from them (good problem). We also got into baldchin groper, black arse and sambo's etc

The standouts were my 18kg dhufish (weighed) caught on a Daiwa pirate jig, my cousins first dhufish on a pirate jig and his 8kg dhufish on drift bait using his Extreme baitcaster rod so plenty of fun!!

All fish were caught at new spots which makes it more exciting and plenty of driving around looking at the sounder. We ate well up there with dhufish parmigiana, dhufish patties, crayfish and more .... living the dream ha ha

Thanks Jimmy and Casey for opening your home to me and it was a great weekend indeed. Good to spend some time with all of you's including the kids...... cheers mate

Nice Dhu bangers on the pirates, never used them before. They obviously do the job though.
Dhu fish parmy, now that's a bloody good idea as well.
Very nice.

Brock O - ha ha yes I enjoy the recon and my deckys walk away learning heaps as I'm normally answering questions/describing my thought's on what I'm seeing!

Boydy - As I say to customers and mates etc, they are very effective on getting a variety of species and easy to work. As for the dhufish parma, eating plenty of fish its nice to mix up the way you prepare it. I told my cousin who's an awesome cook that was the best fish meal I've ever had. He said coming from you Ryan thats WOW ..... yes I ate the fish without the sauce also and 11/10

Thanks for all the comments .... I will be back up soon thats for sure =)

G'Day Ryan! Well done on your catch!

Question for you? I have some of those Pirate jigs but haven't yet put them to use. The standard assists/hooks that they come with look quite small. Are they sufficiently big enough as they seem very small for the mouth of a big dhui. Do I need to change them? I'm new to jigging but any advive would be great.

Cheers, Kuzi.

Daiwa Pirate Jigs!

Fri, 2016-02-19 12:28

There's  different brands of pirate style and some have light guage hooks that need upgrading!

As for your question the hooks on the "Daiwa" Pirate assist's are very strong despite their size!

If you have Daiwa pirate jigs you dont need to change them and they lip hook the fish with 2 hooks going (most times) in so very secure!

Ps .... work the pirate jigs slow with small twiches and a lift for best results ... works for me
