adequate drag on spin reel for jigging?

Hi fellers

What do you reckon is the minimum drag needed on a spin reel for jigging?

I know this depends on country and fish size, so I`m talking bigger fish in rough country.

cheers

Tune your drag to your gear

Hey Basto!

Best way to go about it is to tune your drag to the gear your using.  In other words if you're running a set-up with say 30lb Braid on a PE-2-4 rod you would prob run your drag at a max to 30% of that.  So 4-5kgs of drag.  For a heavier set-up you could go more but remember you gotta be able to hang onto the thing.  Some better rods will state best and max drag set-ups suited to the rod and its limits before it explodes.

Usually it is the rod that will let go first unless you are running braid lighter than then rod rating.

Big part of it is how well you fight the fish too.  A good parabolic rod will help with this.

Hope my opinion helps mate!

Cheers

Yep +1. If running 50lb try

Yep +1. If running 50lb try and get 8-9 kg of drag. Roughly 1/3 line rating. To do this easy without scales I fill a 9l bucket with water 9liters = 9kg. And stand on some higher ground and try lift the bucket off the ground. Its not as easy as you think. Im running 9kg through an evo titanium pe3-6 with 70lb pe5 line. Its about all I want to hold for an extended period of time.

 hmm what setup are u

hmm what setup are u using?

like the boys say 1/3 or 30-33.3% of your line's rating

For a 2-4 outfit. 8kg is the max i go..

however if fishing groupers or dhus in snags u might wanna really lock down your drag and muscle the fish out. once in mid water back off your drag and play the fish slowly. just make sure your set up can take it haha

and for snaggy areas.. i prefer a non parabolic jigging rod that locks up fast.. most parabolic rods lock up too slow for dragging dermersal fish outta snags but work fine for pelagics.

Best of luck! :)

Well, I did the bucket full

Well, I did the bucket full of water test and was surprised at how much force it put on my 37k ugly stik to lift that bucket.

My reel is a Banax SX5000 and only pulls about 16lbs of drag, so I couldn`t quite lift the bucket without locking that drag up, which I really don`t like to do to any reel.

Anyhow, I have a Saragosa 14000f, so my Banax will be a spare. It`s a tough old reel and I have upgraded the drag with carbontex.

 Its crazy hey. Stellas hold

Its crazy hey. Stellas hold 30kg if drag. I dont know how anyone could hold that much drag through a rod. Its rediculous. Im running 3 kg through my pe2 and 4 kg through my pe3 settups and it feels like im going to break the rod.

Yes, I broke a PE3-8 rod

Yes, I broke a PE3-8 rod pulling what felt like about 24 pounds of drag. I have a JM PE8 reel that I have never used because it`s more reel than I have a use for. Purchase mistake. It`s for sale if anyone is interested.
