Often we all think about how
Often we all think about how we can catch bigger or better fish, and we all follow our paths according to intuition.
How would you like to be in a comp where,
We tell you where the Kings & Sambos shoud be!
We give you starting marks, and you can move on from there!
Where the end result is not just a massive fish! But shit! Joe Blow's Mulla off the Busso Jetty, or little Johnies Herring could get a prize...?
What a great COMP to end the school holidays!!
And a reminder none of us can fish for demersals after this weekend!

Sounds like good fun but
Sounds like good fun but just curious about how land based anglers like myself will do the catch and release style weigh in? Or can some one explain how the weigh in process works??

Hey mate,C&R is up to you &
Hey mate,
C&R is up to you & the bag limits but the way the comp works is to avoid weigh in's & use the "measure in" method. A brag matt or tape measure is used & you need to get a few pics, there will be a couple of pics required with competition ID etc. for entry but all this will be explained.
If you land a cracking mulloway & are keeping it, no probs. If you wish to release the fish, no probs but either way you are in the running for a prize(s) & or taking out the title etc.
Have a look on the left at the FW Record Holders Ron has set up, similar process.
We are super keen to see the LB guys get busy in this comp, great diversity on offer with the busso jetty, big seriolas being wrangled with balloons near Dunsborough / Yallingup, West Coast Tailor etc.

Just some FAQ's that need to
Just some FAQ's that need to be addressed.
1) Is this a family only comp?
This is not a "family only" comp, what we intend for is a "family friendly" comp. A big issue for some fisho's is the ability to involve the family in a beloved past time (not just another piss drinking sesh with the lads... or ladies etc.) However judging by the feedback & sign ups already people are very keen to get the family involved, that's awesome & we aim to provide a social atmosphere that will aid that. (maybe even add some much needed brownie points right!!) To the lads wanting to get the boys together & head down for a red hot crack at this puppy?! You beauty, absolutely do that, that's what it's all about if I am not wrong?
2) Do we have to be members of Fishwrecked.com to enter?
Short answer, no!
Adam has been very kind to us in sponsoring this competition for which we are greatly appreciative to him & you the members for accommodating us. Bluetonic & I are avid supporters here, if we can generate more traffic & sign ups here as a result then its a win / win.
3) How do you work out the scoring & prizes?
Bloody good questions & I hope separate answers will help!
The emphasis is on catch & release - by that we want to avoid fish being hung on the gantry for weigh in & then dumped, or upgrades to occur. We have our bag limits set, by all means fish your bag limits there are some damn tasty fish about! The entries will be in form of pictures taken of fish on a brag mat or measure tape (nose to fork) with angler ID provided on sign in (the exact way we expect pics to be taken explained that Friday)
Scoring - I have racked my brain (not large so probably about a minute of my time) to come up with a competition format to provide the best level playing field that would take into account weather, boat size, landbased, local knowledge & angler ability. We want everyone to be in the mix for champion angler junior / senior!
So the plan is to nominate on the friday between landbased, inshore, offshore & deep drop. With those categories will be an equal number of different species will be listed which will concentrate on diversity, three places for each species i.e. 1st, 2nd & 3rd longest with each place awarded points 1st = 3 2nd = 2 & 3rd =1 point.
Separate prizes awarded to different species but "King of the Cape" will be worked out via the points system, this ladies & gentlemen will require a tactical approach. Those that are looking at offshore & deep drop really need to calculate if the weather will be in their favour to be in contention, those that are landbased & inshore will obviously be at advantage if it turns sour. Think carefully before nominating on the sign in Friday, I hope this all makes sense?
4) I haven't fished the area before, can you help me out?
Yep, absolutely.
As above, we want everyone in the mix. Damo & Dave from Dunsborough Outdoor Sportz will have the most up to date info on what & where, co-ords & info on what to look for & how to fish it will be provided. However we are not going to provide a co-ord that everyone is going to smash instead the area you need to be in will be given (landbased, inshore & offshore only. I can't provide deep drop, this is closely guarded secrets... & I have NFI)
This is probably clear as mud... I appreciate any question or input you may have, as this is an inaugural competition that feedback is valuable. We are very appreciative of the support from our sponsors to make this a reality & we hold a strong affinity with our independent businesses.
If you don't want to respond here please pm bluetonic or myself or email & I should have an entry form with financial details up & running in the next couple of days for those that were seeking to transfer funds (your places have been reserved)
Cheers crew,
Bluetonic & Lamby

Great stuff, we are 99% down
Great stuff, we are 99% down with the major prize of the new shimano stella! A huge thanks to Dunsborough Outdoor Sportz, Air Liquide, Bosun Marine & Ultimate Timber Flooring (plus some locals digging into their own pockets, you know who you are) for making this an awesome prospect. We are also on the hunt for a top end reel as a junior prize, amazing start for an inaugural comp IMO.
Any suggestions crew? They are most welcome

G'day Chris, sharks are deffo in landbased category mate. The final species are yet to be locked in but the emphasis is on diversity & level playing field so for you LB fisho's sharks are most definitely in.

Ill try and make the lb section for sure.
Will the landbased section be going ahead no matter the weather?
What would be worth the stella? a 20kg dhuie from the boat or a 5kg dhuie landbased?
Cheers look forward to it.

Jim - the landbased section
Jim - the landbased section is poised for this biggest advantage if you consider weather (as are in the inshore guys) & that section would go ahead regardless except in the instance of lightning, not sure how I feel about people waving graphite in the air!
This comp is about creating the most level playing field between the categories to vie for the title of "King (or Queen) of the Cape". a LB dhuie whilst an epic capture is highly unlikely but landing a shark, yellowtail kingy, sambo, tailor, bonito or squid etc. is not. The comp will identify a number of different species in each category that will be equal, the aim is to try & target as many as you can with points being allocated to 1st - 3rd for each species.
For example
L/B
1st place (3 points) 2nd place (2points) 3rd place (1point)
Tailor, Skippy, Shark, Herring, Snook, Squid
Inshore :
Whiting, Pink Snapper, Sambo, Skippy, Herring, Flathead
You fish the LB section & take out 1st in Tailor, 3rd in Skippy & 2nd in Squid, whilst someone with a small boat in the inshore category gets 3rd in Pink Snapper & 1st in Sambo your scores are;
You: 6 points
Them: 4 points
We will post the species shortly & the tactics are up to you! Do you try & target all the species listed in your section or do you try & target a particular few species knowing you can get on the scoreboard? It's up to you. All the while you are competing against the small boats, big boats & other LB fisho's for the title

Hey Dan, if there are enough
Hey Dan, if there are enough anglers for deep drop to make that section competitive for overall champion points then absolutely & from all accounts there is interest around town but I need to confirm with them first. I spoke with Harro the other day mate, he seems keen & will likely jump aboard with one of you fella's if work doesn't tie him up.

Hey sea-kem.
the Abbey (Newtown Beach) ramp was fully upgraded last summer with a jetty and full textured concrete ramp. Convenient being 1km from my place
Only problem is they stuffed up the design of the rockwall which has created a rediclous build up of weed after every storm.
Pretty good ramp now for boats up to 7m or so, though a bit shallow on low tide.

Abbey Beach Boat Ramp
sea-kem,
If you are talking about the ramp near the rounabout on Caves Rd and Bussel Highway (Turn off Bussel Hwy at Newtown Beach Rd) then.... No it's not sand anymore.
It's been upgraded and is a reasonable concrete two lane ramp with a finger jetty. Not a bad setup but I would imagine busy on good days.
Cheers,

Sorry for the late response
Sorry for the late response to some as BJ pointed out I managed to escape to Bali - no fishing but scored some killer waves, happy days
Thanks to those who have emailed, I have responded & also to those that have paid their comp fees much appreciated.
Jorie - no boundary mate, once you sign in you are off & fishing. It's also a photo / length based scoring system so no weigh in however the Sunday will have a designated cut off time to "measure in" so to speak.
In my absence I see some more prizes donated, I am going to upload pics of them all so you can have a look.
Ps. we have Bootleg & Eagle Bay Brewery's on board with some very generous donations so I would organise the better half (or older kids) to drive lol

Sounds like an awesome comp has been organised by Lamby and BlueTonic Sussed out the old Dunsborough ramp and our accom all looks good. So praying to weather gods now and can't bloody wait to wet a southern line.

If you
were at the old Dunsy ramp yesterday arvo that's about as shallow as it ever gets.
I had to reverse all the way to the end of the ramp with the front tyres well and truly wet

There were a couple of guys
There were a couple of guys launching when I was there around lunchtime. Depth looked alright. Good little finger jetty. I guess parking could be an issue if it gets busy there?

Yeah,
might have even been us?
Parking does get tight but there is a small overflow carpark just round the corner. Early launching helps
Quindalup has a bit more parking and another overflow carpark that was built last year to accomodate for busier times.

The word is the after
The word is the after function will be at Dunsborough & Districts Country Club. (Check out the huge Blue Marlin on the wall caught from here years gone by)
Not Confirmed yet but Lamby might be able to confirm.
I'm going to bump this up every 2nd day now!
Please try to participate if you are in town for this event as I think you will find it will be more a social event than a win at all cost event!
Participation this year will also decide on whether we hold it in future years.

Confirmed!
Friday night we have a keg kindly donated by Eagle Bay Brewery, great support from them & much appreciated! Also a free sausage sizzle to go with it for those wanting to hang around & socialise etc. - I hear some of the land based crew are going to get straight into it, like their work
Sunday "measure in" at the Dunsborough & Districts Country Club, exclusively open to the competitors & their families with 1970's bar prices - can't go wrong! Heaps of area for the kids to play also & as mentioned by BJ the famous Blue Marlin on the wall & again food supplied.

The western one is the pro
The western one is the pro ramp (beach launch) and the eastern one is the main one.
Dan there is another ramp in the old dunsborough area that has a new finger jetty, I would be launching from there if I was you with the commodore. Its a great ramp just a little bit shallow with bigger boats.

Just buzz me Harro. Good GF mate
Dan, if the wind doesn't come from the north the bay will be fine. On Friday you check the weather & if you can't get offshore then you nominate for inshore which would be hotly contested I imagine.
