Transducer problem - please help
Submitted by davidbland50 on Sat, 2013-01-12 17:22
G'day folks,
Having trouble getting a good operation from the transducer for the new Garmin 750s. As these photos show, I have fitted it, (with modifications to the bracket) to sit as per the manual. However, as soon as the boat reaches around 15kts, the depth starts to flash and it stops recording. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Tried that
Yeh Dodgy,
I already had it sitting about 20mm down because the mounting bracket being square would push the unit down. Still the same issue though, starts to flash once you get up on the plane. I had a hds5 before this and the transducer sat further up the right side of the hull. It worked perfectly every time. I just don't know..

Have you tried tilting the trannie back a little so the front is a couple of mm higher than the back? Worked for me. I think that if the front of the unit is low it may cause bubbles to form on the face.

Looks about
Looks about the right hight to me , unfortuantly these type of tranducers are prone to this problem. Your hull also is a deep V , and this dosn't help the problem. With such a large transom pod and looking at your pictures , i would be tempted to mount it on the small flat area just between the bung's . Just an idea but some one else might have more info on this problem, i'd be keen to see what others have to say as i'm about to fit my transducer to the hull .

Maybe move
As you can see in pic 1, the hds5 transducer was further to the right. I wonder if I should move this up to where the old one was. I will be going out Tuesday so I will lower the transducer first at the back and see how that responds.

Transducers
What I would suggest is to video the back of your boat when it is traveling along so you can see where clear water is,also maybe look at through the hull transducer .I had one on my old sounder and it would hold bottom at 20knts.But you need to weigh up the options eg. are you going to keep the sounder or upgrade soon, same applies to the boat.If i was going to keep my boat i would put in a through the hull trans in.I have the same problem HDS 10 Transom mount, loose bottom at speed.PS you can also try taking the transom mount off the back of the boat and trying it through the hull by placing a large piece of Plasticine or play dough on the bottom of the transducer and pressing it to the inside of the hull if you can get access to it and move it around until you get a good reading. That's how you fit a through the hull transducer, some transom transducers also can be used this way.

scottnofish hasd the right
scottnofish hasd the right idea, and its certainly the easiest to try before any radical surgery.

air bubbles
when the boat gets on the plane its likely that air bubbles are causing the issue. Transducer needs water to transmit and receive.
Try moving it further down the v to where it has smooth flow of water.

Prop disturbance
Fdouse,
I read in the installation manual that putting the transducer in line with the leg of the motor would cause problems with the prop (ie. cavitation), what do you think?

Its more that you should fit
Its more that you should fit it on the side where the blade travels down usually stb side to avoid the pressure wave from blades. But id be suprised if you could get any normal outboard boat to line up the tranny with prop which is at least 500mm back. Its more to do with a shaft drive.

You're right, it may.
With the mounting pos pictured above, maybe try lowering it down further into the water stream so it is clear of the hull vee.
Good luck

New position
Well, I decided to try out two of the options suggested. I have mounted the transducer between the two bungs and have slanted the unit with the back lower down. I will be taking it out on Wednesday and we will see how she performs. Wish me luck!!!

All fixed
To all those who gave their advice and especially to Geoff who sent me the transducer instructions, thankyou. I, as I said, have installed the transducer in line with the keel between the two bungs. Also, I sloped the transducer down at the back of the unit. Took it out on the river today from Maylands and did not matter what speed I ran it at, the sounder kept reading the bottom without any breaks. Big smiles :).
And yes, managed to catch a few bream but mostly undersized.
