Mono twist whilst trolling?
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Sun, 2009-04-19 07:34
I top loaded by 6500B early yesterday morning with 300 meters of PENN 10x 10Kg (Low vis green) mono and as soon as I dropped a skirt out the back, it started twisting furiously on the retreive. No matter what I did, with Dave's kind suggestions (swivels/weight, paying out the line etc), the twists would not come out?
Any ideas guys?

get new line nah seriously
get new line
nah seriously it sounds like the skirt isnt verry well balanced and was spinning too much for any swivel to handle, next time try a different skirt and see if it does the same

Cheers Russ...but?
I was considering that myself Russ (getting new line), how do folks rate the 10x?
I (and I might be wrong) wouldn't have though a skirt would have imparted that much twist?
I used to make do with using braid with a long mono shock, and never had problems.

you could try heavier
you could try heavier mono
those reels we got off you we now run 15kg mono for trolling and never had that problem, or even try a better quality of mono , i think the one we have on is big game, mako magic may be able to help as he sold us the line we have

Mono Quality
Cheers Russ - yeah, that's the problem down here, you're limited as to the range of lines (mono and braid) that are available.

Skirt
Hang the skirt along side of the boat as you idle in gear to see look at how it swims, you can adjust its motion by gently bending the eye in the opposite direction of wich way it travels untill you get it right.
With the twisted line, feed it out the back of the boat with nothing attached and drag it for a mile or so.The aim is to feed out more than you were using when the twist happened

Yup
Did that - the skirt swap straight as and I did try feeding the line back unweighted - the mono still went out again twisted.

Solved! And some thoughts on Paternosta Rigs
Gave my mate Matty (Tackle Shack) a call and had a chat about it. Whilst chatting I recalled that I'd replaced the hooks that came with the skirts and I started talking to Matt about hook profiles (bend/bite/set etc). When I mentioned the hooks I'd used (Black Magic KS), Matt started talking about offsetting. Bingo! The hooks are offset (like the old suicide but less so).
So there you go!
Cheers Matt!
Makes you think about the hooks you use for bottom bouncing - especially in deeper water. Offset hooks could cause terminal trace fouls! Regardless of wether you are using triples, full droppers or small droppers with stand outs.
And I've even thought of a solution for unkinking the line....
Hire a helicopter (bare with me on this), tie on a spoon sinker. Have the pilot elevate to (line length) + (safe ground clearance). Drop out the line vertically and hover until all the kinks have 'spun' (via spoon sinker) out.
A quick calc puts it at around $2000

So far I have a decent crop happening here mate. Can't afford dinner so enjoying the spoils of organic vegies. The olde hunter gatherer here Colin. Just wish I could get the hose thing sorted. LOL Also; it's a shame the missus is not that wrapped in fish. I would have a perfect life hunting and gathering;)

Just take car to observe the leaves well, otherwise you'll eat far too many tomatoes and all your aspirations will go up in smoke!

I use offset mustard big
I use offset mustard big reds and you can't blame them for line twist issues on their own. I just don;t have bad problems with twisted line ... but 1) is use 3-ways, not droppers, 2) at the top of my rig I have a snap swivel.

Well, all I know is that after swapping the twists went away completely - and only the hooks were changed - nothing else.
