leaving sounder on while drifting
Submitted by jezman on Sun, 2011-03-20 14:43
hey guys, the otherday when i was out fishing i left my sounder/gps on while i did about a 20 min drift, when i went to restart the merc 140 she didnt want to go. i have a duel battery system with brand new century deep cycle batteries. i left both batteries on because i knew it would only be a short drift. the sounder is an 11" colour lowrance gps combo
do u think i have a problem with my batteries or is this normal to drain batteries that quick?

Are they just deep cycle or do they have a good crank rating?
They may not have enough starting punch
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

yeah not sure exactly, will
yeah not sure exactly, will check them over when i get home next week, they are fairly big girls, would expect at least above the 500cca mark. i never had any real issues with my last batteries, just replaced them because they were 3 years old and i had got my moneys worth out of them

I just put a combo in the truck and no way will that go flat over a few hours of running the stereo or the odd time you leave the lights on.

CCA & VSR
Jez, if fully charged and you have say 700cca it should be sweet but theres obviously an issue. Once sorted i'd look at putting on a VSR setup on your dual batterys for recharging & maintenence......thats what I've done on my two boats and

Def batteries
yep your batteries are cactus to say, the lowrance sounder only draws 2-3 amps at max. something else you must have had on at the same time or during the drift.bilge pump, stereo, maybe some lights that u may not have noticed. Or the batteries just ran out of spark. What you should get is a vsr or when you leave the ramp switch it to both, once your there and wanna do a drift switch to the house battery(1 or2) and use that atleast when your ready to go and start your motor you know the other has plenty to get you started.

If u have your batteries set
If u have your batteries set to both or ( dual) and one battery is flat the flat batterie will drain the charged batterie until they ate both equally charged this could mean u go from having one fully charged battery and one flat battery to having two batteries that are good for f all. I always leave my terminal on either 1 or 2 never on both unless both batteries are nearlydead and u need to use both together to start the donk hasn't happened yet (touch wood)
