Importing my second boat

I recently sold my first American import boat because it was too big so I have been looking around at boats in Perth and I cant find one that I want....

They are either too expensive, too old or dont have everything I want... After finding most second hand boats not meeting my needs I decided at looking at new ones. I got quotes on new plate aluminium boats and new fibreglass boats... for what I want it was going to cost me $80k plus

I was doing some looking online and I have spoken to a dealer in Fort Lauderdale in America who has been extremely helpful..... I can get a 2013 23 foot seafox with a brand new 200HP yamaha four stroke for $55k or a 23 foot Polar with twin 115hp yamaha 4 bangers for around the same price... so judging by what I paid last time for my first boat (which was bigger) I could easily get any of these boats over here for a lot less than $80k.... I would even have enough change to buy an expensive sounder.

Now I have to decide on what I really want to do................

why can they make a boat in america and be brought to oz cheaper than it can be made locally.answer= everyone wants to be paid big bucks but buy things cheap.just doesn`t work.

and the governmet taxes don`t help either.

Easy answer

Wed, 2013-02-13 18:50
  •  1 Tax Tax and a bit more tax
  •  2 High wages
  •  3 Gst on all products used
  •  4 Greater population (higher damand)
  •  5 Higher rents or cost of buying a premises.
  •  6 Better quality materials used. Look at a yank boat thats the same years old in Australia vs the same vintage Aussie boat and you will see the reason
  •  Im sure a few local manufacturers could add a fair few more. If i ever import a yank boat it would be a high end one.

yep

Tue, 2013-02-12 12:42

Handi I have sent you a PM

And Keg you are dead right... the cost of living over in America is rediculously cheaper than it is here in Australia, therefore people can afford to be paid less over there than here thus making goods and services over there extremely cheap (compared to here).... and yes the reason why it is rediculously expensive to live here is australia is because of our federal government (Not necessarily the one in power ATM because it was fucked way before they came in... I hate the red head bitch tho)

I can also get an aluminium trailer built to Australia standards with electronic brakes for this boat and its only going to cost $4k..... Priced one up here is OZ and its minimum $11k............. No brainer where I would prefer to buy

Cheers guys

Tad over $80k??

Tue, 2013-02-12 15:34

Geezzz what are u paying an extra $25k for?? Someone is raping u hard!! Who did u go thru?

when I baught my last boat over the boat was $30k, shipping around $10k, gst tax was $4.5k and little bits and pieces cost another $1k... I budgeted $50k for my 25 foot trophy and had enough change from that to buy a nice sounder/plotter.

would like to know if ur paying $55k for the boat then what are u spending $25k on?

Add new trailer, GST,

Tue, 2013-02-12 20:12

Piggy, the 55 k was bare boat, no trailer Add new trailer, GST, freight, ports costs, insurance etc. It adds up. On your 30k boat your all up costs of 46k was over 50 percent extra. My boat at 55k plus 6.4 k for a specced up brand new ali trailer ( not the base bare model) plus a few other bits and bobs i added in the states totals $63k, total landed cost of $81 k is less than 30 percent. Also, freight is volume based, i left the hardtop on to stop damage etc which costs me more freight, but i was more comfortable with this option. I suggest I have done ok at less than 30 percent compared with your plus 50 percent ?

Piggy, yep, bought the boat

Wed, 2013-02-13 07:02

Piggy, yep, bought the boat in late December but with Christmas and all, decided to wait till after new year to ship it. Had a few delays sorting out the trailer but nothing serious, the yanks are excellent to deal with, very professional!

Boat is a 2009 BW 235 Conquest with only 40 hrs, basically new. Looked long and hard at oz boats, liked the Haines 650R and Cruisecraft 680, both great boats but too expensive for what you get. 235 was the only American boat that suited my needs, as it does not have the Euro transom design that is Popular with most American boats.

Due in Freo in a few weeks, currently in the Atlantic.

Euro transom basically has a

Wed, 2013-02-13 13:58

Euro transom basically has a flat interior across the transom cokcpit interior, with a large deck all the way across that that the outboards are mounted to. Pretty common on Trophies, Conquest 255 and some Outrages, Keywest's, Seaswirls etc. A lot of Oz boats have headed down this path as well. It results in a great looking boat, with a big deck out the back of the cockpit area that makes diving etc good but results in a long distance from where you stand to fish to get around the motors, especially with short jig rods.

The 235 has the cockpit extended all the way to the back of the starboard side, a bit like old skool boats,  and to some it looks a bit dicky, but makes fishing heaps better, and it does NOT have a walk through transom. Again, walk through transoms are popular, just not with me. My old boat had one and they are nice to get in and of of the boat at home but get in the way when fishing and dont have the right cushions etc.

As i said, it is not everyones cup of tea, and a lot of the yanks did not like the 235 because of the transom design, but apparentlhy Boston Whaler designed it in based on customer feedback from the previous Conquest 230 design which had a Euro transom.

Nope Jamie, not on that ship...at least I dont think so......why?
