Furuno 587
So am close to buying one of these units but just wanting to find out a little more info on peoples experience with who they bought their electronics from, and if they had it installed, or installed themselves.
Have got a 26ft Fury Centre console
Picture below is of the dash however its a little old, the GPS on the left has been replaced with a Lowrance HDS7
The problem i have is the 8.4" screen will not fit in the whole cut out where the current Navman Sounder is on the right, so need to do some dash re-modeling to make it fit. Possibly pull out the radio and move elsewhere on the right to make room, but will need to fill / patch the holes.
2nd issue / question is Transducer type. I've read a few different threads on this site, and have a mate who currently has a 585 with a 1KW transom mounted tranny and still not sure on which method to choose.
Im not a fan of cutting a whole in the hull so thats not an option.
I would like to be able to travel at speed (Lets say upto 30kn would be great) and still get a picture of the bottom. The boat runs twin donks so not sure if the additionall drag of the large transom mounted tranny (10 inches long 6.7" deep, 4.2" wide transom mount) will create spray / rooster tail.
Accessing the inside of a flush deck is not easy, and would require cutting the deck joints to access. I cannot see any other possible options for this, as the access holes (port holes) most likely are not in the right spot to be able to gain access to the unside of the hull.
3rd. Different transducers. The two options are the TM260 HD 1KW and the TM270W 1KW. has anyone used or have the 270W fitted to their boat. the 270W specs show at 130m deep you can read 50m wide range of the bottom. Question i have (and it may sound stupid but I've not found too much on it) is are you able to pin point where the fish actually are? 50m is not veyr precise.
4. Has anyone used a boat / electyronics company in Perth to supply and install such a setup?
Cheers
Bodie

You are about to spend some
You are about to spend some $$ on good for it's day but already outdated equipment.
Broadband sounders are replacing the old style single band pingers.
This together with the newly released HD structure scan overlay possibilities means that the way we fish and search for fish has been stepped up a notch or 2
Furuno are still in the analogue era.
If you compare it to mobile phones while the rest, Garmin, Simrad and Lowrance are making broadband fishfinders and digital high power process units to run and colade all the relevant material from Broadband fishfinders.
I had to make a deceision when I went ahead with the refurb of my tub including new electronics which had to be able to incorporate Auto Pilot function so I can fish/ trolling on my own.
The HD Lowrance/Simrad structure scan is amazing.

Maybe a good idea to try to learn something instead of asuming that you know all.
And not to say anything that you would not in person.

I think you'll find even the older 585 was a digital unit if you take the time to look into it yourself.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

There seems to be a slight
There seems to be a slight difference between "digital" and "broadband" applications
But who am I to tell you the difference!
A Furuno 587 is just an slighty upspeced /rebadged Navman 4500.
Chew on that one for a wee while

Not worried about saying
Gastro, I`m not worried about saying anything in person to you or anyone else. Read some of your previous posts mate, you have an opinion that everything else is shit apart from your fantastic simrad gear. You havnt supplied any info apart from a few youtube vids to back up your position. When youve done 800 or more hours with your fantastic simrad gear then I`ll listen to you, until then your opinion is pretty much worthless I reckon. Sorry if that upsets you.

Hi Tech is where I got all my gear from.
Highly recommended.
They have just added a big chandlery section in their shop.
It is well stocked and well priced compared to nearby other sources.

Can't go wrong with the
Can't go wrong with the furuno 585 or 587. Its all you need to find ground and fish.
Go the TM260 if your mainly using it for bottom fishing. The TM270 is mainly for finding bait schools with its wide beam.

BodieI have bitten the bullet
Bodie
I have bitten the bullet and ordered the dual set of ss264 1kw transducers from the US. The 200kHz has arrived and the 50kHz is due in by Fedex tomorrow. I have managed to get over the holes in the hull syndrome after speaking at length with Cruise Craft. As a manufacturer they have gone away from transom mount and now recommend wet faced through hull for best performance. Mind you I nearly fell over when I saw the size of these suckers. I intend to have these fitted by site sponsor Hayway Marine next Thursday so that the job is done right.
I have gone the through hull to get away from all of the issues associated with transom mount and to get a good picture in the deep at speed. The ss264 pair is the equivalent of the M260 which is difficult to mount in a Cruise Craft. These transducers are also mix and match which allows me to swap head units by just changing a $50 cable. I will be hooking these transducers into a HDS8. If I then upgrade which is more than likely I will deal with the same issues that you are faced with on your dash, ripping out existing units, repairing and installing new so I will be fairly keen to see how Johno's work pans out.
I will post up pics of the install and hopefully some meaningful images marking fish on the bottom at 25 knots !
As an aside, I had several email exchanges with Gil Travis who is a site sponsor of The Hull Truth, Gil is supposedly the guru when it comes to this type of stuff. He recommended the Furuno 585/587 over the Lowrance which he claimed was not a broadband sounder, rather it can process broadband but does not transmit in broadband. Reckons its smoke and mirrors by Lowrance. I dont know myself and I have not been able to find out specifically. Can anyone else comment ? More than likely I will go with the Furuno as well.
cheers

Regarding the dash
Regarding the dash remodelling etc, I did some pretty extensive refurbing of my tub'S dash last year using panels and it was a pretty good & economical DIY outcome
See my old thread for info - just another option for you.
It's a much more modest tub, but you'll get the idea :

A navman over a furuno!!!!!!
A navman over a furuno!!!!!! You muppet .there are plenty of people put sim rad gear in there boats and there is plenty that put furuno gear in their boat.difference is the furuno gear stays in the boat the simrad gets ripped out.Look on the net, a LOT of negative on simrad not much on furuno. As has been said all pro fisherman have jrc or furuno . They must be outdated fisherman . Once they get their shit sorted I believe they will be good sounders but at the moment they are too much in the infancy.

But be happy with what you got
"Simrad being ripped out" You are a muppet!
Only when you deal with "Installers/second string retailers" who do not know how it works, do not have the training and you yourself do not have the skills to pick up their errors.

Decided to glass the dash,
Decided to glass the dash, which Scott Fury (Fury custom boats) is doing.
Also no longer going to put a transom mounted Transducer and going to put a B164-20 1 KW through hull transducers on scott's recommendations. He said he no longer does transom mounted Transducers and all are through hull.....so cutting a hole in the hull!
Just purchased the 587 and should be fitted this week.
After talking to the guys at the dealer i purchased the sounder from, they did tell me that the lowrance equivelent actually does not reach 1KW as the lowrance HDS units only transmit a max 600w, even if fitted with a 1KW transducer. Dont want to open a can of worms, but this is how it was explained to me.
Will put up some photos once complete.

Very interested to see how the B164 reads at speed and how deep you can get. I am looking at this vs the B264 pair.
