Electronic rust protection

Hi all

Im looking at putting one of those electronic rust protectors on my boat trailer.

Im wondering has anybody else done this and if so is it a good idea.

I can see a few little problems like running wiring through the trailer as there's between 4 to 8 anodes ,  running it from the boat battery it will draw 32mil amps so have to keep battery charged

you will have to remember to disconnect.

My trailer is showing some signs of rust and its nearly $6000 to replace new and for $160 i can try this.

IS IT A GOOD IDEA?

they work well on the car as we got it done but not too sure on the trailer tho, $160 for it might be worth trying as it wont be a great loss if it doesnt work.

Separate

Connect the trailer unit to a separate battery or wire from the boat battery when you are not using it and to the car battery when you are.

Get one of those chargers that keep the trailer/ boat battery topped up automatically

We got electronic rust proofing

Tue, 2010-11-16 08:08

on the hi-lux back in 1993 when we bought it new, just have a tiny bit of rust on the front drivers panel where the mudflap is drilled in.  We were impressed with the e/rust proofing that we also got it on the new  land cruiser, certainly worth the money.

Hi Saltie

Tue, 2010-11-16 16:46

heaps of beach driving sometimes tide coming in and the tyres got wet.  Launched the boat from the Club and Leeman since we bought it.

People say its a waste of money, but we have been happy with it and as I said got the new land cruiser also with eletronic rust proofing.  Which once we do our 800klms will be towing the boat launching in Leeman and driving/fishing on the beach, dirt tracks, she's our new work horse, keeping the ute also.  Very happy for the age of the hilux with one spot of rust which will be cut out pretty soon.

Nissan

Tue, 2010-11-16 09:02

Had one fitted to the first Nissan patrol and after  heaps of beach work without a wash off after there wasn't a spot of rust on it when I got rid of it after some seven years .

Fitted one to the patrol ute that lived on the beach, boat ramps when I was pro fishing and again no rust, it was used for carting salmon, dragging boats out of the surf you name it.

Not sure on the cheaper ones on ebay but the better ones certainly worked in my experience

Have had one on my Patrol

Tue, 2010-11-16 09:59

Have had one on my Patrol from new.  At 3 months of age I bogged her on a 5 metre incoming tide in Darwin.  With all 4 wheels covered in sand, waves over the roof and water up to the seats inside - there is still no rust on her -absolutely swear by them.  Couldn't beleive we snatched it out - lucky an F350 was near by and I had 2 straps linked together to keep him on the concrete.

Check this site for trailers though - you need a constant power source and have to paint galv.

http://www.erps.com.au/faqs.html

Q.  Will the ERPS system work on galvanised panels or boat trailers?

A.  Because the galvanised surface is conductive the system’s charge will dissipate into the atmosphere. For the ERPS system to operate correctly the galvanised surface must be painted.  The paint acts as an insulator holding the charge onto the surface of the steel.

Q.  Can the system be used on trailers, camper trailers or horse floats?

A:  Yes,  the system can be mounted directly onto the trailer. The Electron generator can be powered by a 12 volt supply from the towing vehicle or can be plugged into the mains supply via an AC adaptor when the trailer is not in use. If necessary the system can also be powered from a motorcycle battery and a small (5 Watt) solar panel.

"I can see a few little problems like running wiring through the trailer as there's between 4 to 8 anodes"

Small battery and bolt unit to winch post.  Neg wire to post - easy.  Not sure what you need anodes for?  Different unit - I'd steer clear of cheap units (not worth it).

Cheers Pete

better to spend your money else where

Wed, 2010-11-17 11:24

A-salt-weapon,

You would be better off spending the money on beers, then taking a little extra time washing down the trailer and giving it a good coating in fish oil/similar.  The protection these things offer would be minimal at best.

There was on my car when I

Thu, 2010-11-18 11:22

There was on my car when I bought it (can’t remember brand) and the bare metal (little scratches etc.) is rusted at about the same rate as every other car I have owned.  If it is did something it’s not much.

I also asked one of the corrosion protection experts at work (offshore oil and gas industry) about these devises when I first brought my car.  He told me that although they claim to work on the same principles as anodic protection used on wharfs etc. they will not work on a car (unless you park in the pool I guess).

Cheers
