Barrington Aluminium Boats

Hi Everyone,

I am looking at getting back into a boat after a couple of years and found a 6 mtr Barrington 2005 model and was wondering if anyone can give me any info on what they are like ride wise etc, the other option is a Mustang 2250 Walkaround.

Cheers

Mark

Ali Vs Glass

Tue, 2010-11-16 16:57

G'day Mark

Ride wise the glass boat - Mustang would seriously be my choice- eyes closed.

Tho heavy to tow the ride is gonna be superior, and if you fish nights or winter glass is warmer than ali. I do quite a bit of both - have a 5m Cat - love the stability and soft ride - its not the fastest boat but in  most seas cats tend to manage well compared to mono hulls. What motor(s) are on the boats- that may sway a decision  as the motor is a big part of yr rig plus economy etc.

Cheers

Ali Vs Glass

Hi Pez,

Thanks for the info, had a signature last time and was very pleased with the ride but have never had an ali boat. Hoping to do a bit of fishing up north with it as well as here in Perth and even venture down south. The Barrington has a 140hp 4st Suzuki with 130 hrs and the Mustang has a 225 Yamaha 4 st hours unknown.

Thanks again for your reply.

thers a big difference in those two rigs you have chosen and there would be a reasonable $$ difference IMO   . the Mustang  2250 walk around  which are a pretty good rig , the Barrington Alli would certainly not ride any where near as well as the Glass hull.

The choice would also depend on your location and fishing / diving habits whether the alli is more suited than the glass

Thanks Just Dhu It for the reply, understand what you are saying with the difference and there is about 20k dif in price. Will be based in Perth but looking to travel north and south so was thinking about the weight dif when towing.

Thanks again

the way the new ali hulls are built they dont bang or missbehave much at all. i just got a 5.5 mt coraline bream boat and dad has the 500 centre console and id be lieing if i said they banged at all. in saying that though glass hulls will ride better but not 20 k better imo

ali vs glass

i have had 11 boats 10 ali and 1 glass and this glass boat has opened up a whole new world of boating to me the difference in larger boats 6-7.5m glass to ali is huge imo, now in severe chop i can still sit on 20kts and not get slammed every second wave , even large ali mono hulls suffer from a harsh ride in certain sea conditions  anyone who"s been on the old bluejuice (60ft ali ) can tell you that . and my mate has a mustang 2250 and they are a particularly sweet riding hull , sure you pay more but if you can afford it you wont think about the money after a 20+ mile ride home when the weather turns nasty!!! go the glass boat for sure   cheers

If you've had a Haines you will hate an ali boat, and maybe the Mustang too?

Take both for a run on the water. Preferably on the same day. Test the driving position, ease of low/high speed maneuvering. Fishability. Then make your decision.  You’d be surprised at what you will find out.  Also Get a thorough check on both boats to ensure there are no structural problems. Last thing you want to do is have to spend $000 on repairs.

I have an ali boat. Cheap, good fuel consumption, CRAP ride.....simple as that!

The big debate.....

Fri, 2010-11-19 15:41

Ive owned a 6m Barrington (1998) for a few years and it did the job (took it to the Monties 4 or 5 times no worries from Dampier). Upgraded to a 6.8 Haines Encore wich provides twice the comfort in ride, but half the deck room. I swore I would never buy another Ali until I went on a 750 Preston craft which really suprised me - definately the best riding single hull Ali Ive been in - so I bought one and have not regretted it one bit. If I was to get another boat, I would get a bigger Preston hands down.

Its all about what you are going to use it for most of the time, ie camping, fishing or cruising long distances, and go with that.

Out of the two boats you mention though, Id go the mustang.....by a mile.

Have fun

I think the mustang walk

I think the mustang walk arounds do channel a lot of water into the cockpit if you are in rough water. The walk around area acts like gutters
