Boat getting a birthday
Hey all
Have got a week off work next week and have been collecting a few things to give my boat a tidy up.
The boat is a 5.4 metre aluminium Centre Console built by Legend Boatbuilders with dual batteries.
I have decided to pull up the carpet and apply something called seadek. In order to lay this i will need to clean up the deck that has old glue that previously held the carpet in place. I am thnking I will try and clean up the glue with metho and a scraper and then, once cleaned I will paint the bare deck. Any ideas on what would be best to clean the deck with and what paint I should be looking at using?
After that I will be installing a bilge pump, removing the old MHZ radio and aerial that have seen better days and the old stereo and speakers. These will be replaced with a new fusion stereo, new AM/FM aerial, installing a wiring panel. I will also sand back the wooden doors on the console and paint them with a glossy paint to tidy them up and seal them to prevent warping etc. I have also got a new inspection port for the back as the plastic has perished on the old one.
I am not a particularly mechanically minded person so any advice or products you can recommend or advice for getting this right would be appreciated. I will post up some before and after pictures after the work is done and hopefully a bit of hard work will give the boat a few more years of trouble free adventures.
Cheers
Phil

With the carpet
With the carpet in my boat, i found many layers of glue. Over time it had been reglued with contact and liquid nails. I tried Metho, turps and thinners but all they did was make a mess and nearly kill me with toxic fumes.
The best thing i found was a paint scraper with replacable blades and heaps of elbow grease. Then i finished of the edges with a stainless steel brush on the grinder.
I found with the scaper the glue came of faster and better without any solvents used. I tried a few different scapers but the best one i used had a razer blade that you can replace quickly, i'll ad a picture of the one i used .

Thanks for the advice Grantarctic appreciate your input
I will locate a scraper like the one you have posted and give it a bash. Will let you know how it goes. It is pretty ugly under the carpet so I was hoping there may be some way of making it easier but looks like solvents could just make more of a mess.

Yeah its not a fun job
Yeah its not a fun job to do Phil. Some products like paint striper and acid can realy mess with aluminium. Thats why i ended up just doing it by hand and a few hours work.
Here is a link to my job and how it ended up looking.

Seadek
Hi Greasemonkey
I bought the seadek from a mob over east. I dealt with a guy called Paul Madden who was helpful and provided heaps of photos and advice. I bought 6 sheets 2 metres x 1 metre and 5mm thick and went with the aqua-camo colour. I think it cost about $85 for freight. It is pretty expensive but I am hoping it is long lasting, reduces noise and has a bit of a cushioning effect. I will post up some before and after pics once I have ripped the carpet out and cleaned the deck.I thought I would give it a go and see how it goes and do a write up once it has been in the boat for a while.

I have attached a few photo's from a boat from QLD with the seadek in.
