Uniden 27mhz fault.

G'day all. My 27mhz has taken to beeping and has a flashing screen. In addition, when ptt is pressed the screen goes completely blank, but recovers if I hold it down. Plenty of clean power to the unit, and it's not that old. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance, John.

yes especially as no commercial vessel is required to carry or monitor it, exactly the best people to get for a rescue

VHF better all round

Thu, 2025-03-06 09:28

Switched to VHF a decade ago and it is good. Easy to use, monitored by nearly everyone, clear to talk with other boats and shore bases. A few miles better  range also, which can be boosted by the network of VHF repeaters located along the coast at places like Rotto, Dunborough etc..

I think a 10-15 years ago most rec fishers  used 27, so that would have been good for talking to other fishers, but these days I reckon most recs  and all commercial monitor VHF. As Sunshine said, it is old  tech and 27mhz is being phased out. It will no longer be compliant from 1 September 2028.
