Towing Over Width Boat Trailer
Submitted by The Saint on Thu, 2017-08-31 06:54
Hi All,
Can anyone give me some info or direct me to a link that will show latest rules and regs that come with towing an over width boat trailer.
I've been seaching but found nothing specific.
I know that a permit was required, along with signage and flashing light, keep off freeways and tow daylight hours only.
Is that still the case or have any of the above rules been relaxed ?
Is there anyting else that may need to be taken into consideration ?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Towing an overwidth trailer
Towing an overwidth trailer has real issues.
Some rules have been relaxed around the width of the load but the trailer width of 2.5m still stands.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Also check weight
If your boat is overwidth I'd also make sure you know what it weighes, and by that I mean fill it up with fuel, gear etc.
then you need to knwo what your vehicle can legally tow
Some more fishwrecked information here on overwdith towing fishwrecked.com/forum/towing-oversized-us-boats
there is a link in there to WA Transport document
When in doubt I'd recommend that you ring themup for a chat

To be a little more specific....
To be a little more specific, trailer is not overwidth, boat is 2.59 metres.
backlash, weight will not be an issue.

No that's definitely not
No that's definitely not correct.
If you need signs you will also need a permit, copy of the regs, corner flags and a flashing lite if under 2.7 and at night

The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.

Everything is on the Main roads website.
For a boat 2.59 Same as mine you are required to have an Oversize sign front and back. Four flags at the widest points of the load. You will also need to have a class 1 RAV permit ($50 for three years) and have the trailer the oversize load is on registered. There is three forms you will need to fill in to get it all sorted. Main roads who check oversize loads will care about the weight if your trailer isn't rated to the total weight of the oversize load on it. They won't care about what your vehicle can legally tow only your insurance mob will care about that if you have a crash. As stated above you don't need a flashing light and you are not restricted to driving during the day if you are under 2.7m wide. Head lights are required to be on also.
Go to the mainroads website and search RAV in the search tool and it should bring up the page you require I couldn't post the link for some reason.

Anything over 2.5 mate.
Straight from the operating conditions on main roads website.
In these Operating Conditions, a RAV means a Class 1 vehicle carrying a large indivisible item that exceeds one or more of the following dimension limits or is designed to carry a large indivisible item: (a) 2.5 m wide; (b) 4.3 m high; and (c) 19 m combination length.

Thanks all for the info.
I've found the RAV document on the Main Roads website and printed off a copy, fairly long winded but I'll work my way through it.
Minesy, can you tell me if the freeway is still off limits ?
If I decide to go down this path I want have all bases covered, hence doing all the homework first. Would hate to have an accident and lose boat and car because I had overlooked something and wasn't covered by insurance.

Freeway is off limits to all
Freeway is off limits to all oversize loads, you dont need a flashing light during the day if your under 3m and headlights on as mentioned. Make sure you read class 1 oversize rules and not road train / B double rules as they differ slightly. I think the flashing light at night is more trouble than it's worth, I've run lots of OS loads at night on North west coastal highway and found it upsets the oncomming traffic as a lot of drivers are unsure of whats heading towards them. I't cost me quite a few windscreens with caravans and boats running of the road. Watch your height to if you have long antenna's, 4.3 max and any higher needs a western / Horizon power permit.

Not all oversize are affected by this clause.
The public holiday clause is only for vehicles over 2.7m wide and it really only is applied to the forest highway and old coast road for those weekends to help with congestion on those roads at the time. It is only vehicles over 4.5m which can't use the roads statewide at all on long weekends. So it is not really a major issue unless you have a bloody massive boat. If you do it just means you have to tow on the thursday and the tuesday which makes your weekend longer if you can get the time off. Win win.
