Mercury 50hp stroke behaviour

G'day folks, new to the forum this is my first post.

 

I recently bought my first boat a '07' Bermuda 450 with a 2 stroke 50hp Mercury on the back. It's now done 21 hours and due for it's 1st service.

 

Now this engine starts quite well with a couple of pumps of the primer but she is so bloody lazy when she first gets going and also a bit smokey. By lazy i mean i give it some throttle and it will creep up to the desired rev range in minutes rather then instantly. I can't give her full throttle early coz she just won't do it, she's a lazy bitch. No problems when in idle and she has never conked out or coughed. Once she has had a run she will drive like normal even if i pull up somewhere and turn her off for a few hours. When i start her back up she can hit top speed no worries, it's just when she goes in the first time.

 

Is it normal for a 2 stroke to need warming up and act a bit sluggish?

i don't think thats normal.   someethings up there.

i've had a couple of two strokes and they were ready to get up at first crack of the throttle

i'm sure the service will pick something up

Often when sitting fuel and oil can seep past the rings so when first started it runs sluggish and pumps heaps of smoke. Try standing the motor trimed down position and see if that helps. This can even be a issue with 4 strokes if left tilted up.

My guess is an oil injection problem (too much oil on startup)  Now to find the reason.

When you flush the motor after the previous trip do you pull the fuel hose off and then run the motor for a minute or so to use some of the fuel in the motor before putting it away.  I have an oil injected Johnson and it sometimes has the exact same problem.  Smoky at the ramp and then perfect for the rest of the day.  Discovered dad was pulling off the fuel hose to burn fuel off before putting it in the shed.  Only problem is if the motor starts to run lean it then pumps in more oil to compensate hence being over oiled when starting it next time.  Some older O/I Johnsons are notorious for this to the point some owners disconnect the oil injection and just pre mix the fuel. 

Other issues - could also mean it is running lean for another reason,  Check your fuel lines (airleaks) and makes sure your priming the bulb as much as possible before starting.  It is possibly its not getting primed enough at start up and then the vaccum is pulling enough through later and hence not being a problem afterwards when moving from spot to spot.

I do park the boat up with the motor tilted so i will start leaving it in the trimmed position to see if that helps. Maybe oil is seeping through like Rod suggested.

 

Paul, i don't touch the fuel lines when i flush the engine. I just put the water muffs on and let the engine idle for about 5 minutes. I am possibly not priming the bulb enough. I only give it a couple of squeezes and the engine will start on the second turn of the key.

So i will try leaving the motor trimmed down and prime the bulb until it goes hard, see if that makes the diffence.

 

Again thanks for the advice, lots to learn. I must say this site is unreal. I have learnt alot just by reading the hundreds of posts here. Lots of knowledgeable people that are willing to pass on information.
