denham advice

hey fellas

im heading to denham late september/oct and was looking to clear a few things up. ive read many many posts of others asking for advice and ive still got a few questions. only really looking for pointers inside the bay and maybe the hartog channel, not really keen on venturing outside steep point unless its flat and glassy. have been up there before but would rather do some catching instead of bait wasting this time haha. a few quickies for u guys.

is it better to drift or anchor and burley?

am i waisting my time trolling between spots?

has anyone found good spaniards in the channels of bar/middle flats or are they further north?

do you fish bent pin as if its structure where the fish is held, or is it the ground around bent pin where the fish are?

are bait or jigs/sp better or is it personal preference?

what kind of areas are coral torut found?

any help and advice is greatly appreciated thanks guys :)

Definitely drift. Unless your at bent peg then anchor up as the current can get quite strong. I mainly y fished out near turtle bay but that's 36nm each way.

Trolling is dependent on how much

ribbon weed there is about. Worthwhile as you will pick up plenty of doggie mackerel and chance of a spanaird/Trev/shark mack/cobia

jigs or bait??

Mon, 2020-08-10 05:54

I reckon bait still outperforms jigs up there but maybe I'm doing it wrong. Mullet seems to be best for Pinkies, especially the further south in the gulf you are.

Spanairds are about but dont expect one each day......

Thanks mate. So your saying if there's lots of weed then troll? And I haven't heard anybody say anything about mullet before so I'll give it a crack. Cheers

Get yourself a bag of whiting heads up there for bait, single hook on a running sinker, drifting, found fishing on the high tides worked for us.

Yeah there is a factory .

Yeah there is a factory . The whiting heads are like candy to the fish up there. From memory they weren't too expensive.  They also hold on the hook better than squid

Turtle Bay

Thu, 2020-08-13 08:12

Even though it is a trek every time we have been up that way we have always gone up to turtle bay on the northern end of dirk Hartog island. Up that way you literally need no spots just do long paddock drifts between turtle bay and Dorre island.
If you head straight to dirk Hartog from Denham and travel up the inside of dirk Hartog there are patches of real shallow reef you can see close to shore. We threw poppers and stick baits in there and picked up all sorts of species like spangled emperor, trout, trevally.
Good luck mate

Cheers piggy, would be insane to get up to turtle bay/levillian shoal and would need a full glass out all day to feel comfortable going all the way out there will give the shallows of Hartog a go that sounds like heaps of fun thanks for the tip mate

If you have a dog tie it down

Blowing its ring off here, last night sorted out the non seasoned campers. Many have packed up and left this morning.  Don’t think the council will be whinging about emptying the bins at the cleaning station this holidays.

Normal

Sun, 2020-10-04 09:15

Its normal for this time of the year, starts mid August and runs till end of February. You have to be lucky and cop a window when it drops off and make the most of it while you can.

Rang the missus at the roadhouse this morning and she said lot of people returning from Exxie and Coral Bay complain g about the wind, seems they haven't been up there before or checked seasonal conditions
