07 - June - 2008 - Brief Report
My wife and I headed out from Albany on Saturday, after a 3 month period of non boating, so it was good to be out on the water again. With northerly winds and small swell/seas, it promised to be a good day.
The conditions allowed us to head west towards and around Eclipse Island - about 5 or so K's off the coast and 20 or so Ks west of King George Sound.
Here's us leaving Oyster Harbour, just after we logged in to Albany Sea Rescue:
Conditions where still pretty choppy and we finally approached the island:
We fished various spots around the Island and another group close by - The South West Island.
Fish caught were mainly Breaksea Cod (Black Arse), One wrasse, a scorpion fish, three buff bream and a swallow tail.
BTW, my beenie looks bigger Andy, cause I have a smaller head

)
My wife had a few reall big blighters on, one buried her in a reef and aother bust off.
Not a HUGE day by any means, but good to be out on the water!

Cheers Spess - yeah, ton's of black bums down around that way - I caught my bag limit very quickly and the rest where released. Actually, the water out wide was quite warm - it was when I had to wade out to hook the boat up in the harbour that my breath was taken away.

Not easy.....YTKs - Hang On!
Cheers - Tell you what Andy, that's quite a compliment - because my wife reckons I have a huge (physically) cranium LOL.
By Kingie's you means YTK's Andy? There have been some big ones caught, but further east. The bust offs that my wife had may have been from YTKs. I've caught a few smaller ones around there previously.
I wanted to free bait a double snelled slab down for them yesterday, but we had too many mutten birs and albatroses around the boat.
We found a spot yesterday - goes from 64m to 10m - straight up! BOY - we are SO gonna fish that spot next time! Drift a bait down that water column and hang on I reckon!

Have u done some fishing down there andy mac? i have only been out once, good family friend owns spinners charters down there. I would like to explore some more thas for sure

Offshore and Oyster Leases
Spess - we covered a fair bit of ground from 30 ks East to 30 Ks West. I'm trying to alk my wife into fishing deep 100m-200m coral and bommies - but haven't had success. Spinners do well down here.
Andy, yeah, we tried around the oyster leases, but could only raise skippy, YT and herring, one flat head and a small hammer head.

A nice read there DW.
Great and a lil exciting read there mate. Solid Foxfish too. I reckon it would of not been easy to rig up new rigs when its that cold down that way. Shaking hands and setting rigs aren't a good combination, lol.

I was actually drift baiting
I was actually drift baiting on my 30lb outfit and getting nailed very drop. we were in about 70m by memory. Some thumper skippy and snapper where caught as well.

Rigs
Cheers Elora - thats a King Wrasse (Coris auricularis) not a Fox Fish (Bodianus frenchii) - they look similar - but body markings, head shape, anal and caudal fins are different. As for gear - I usually have about 40 rigs of various configs made up - makes it easy and more time fishing.

Arhhh then there will be no problems with rigging. 40 rigs is alot, I don't I have patience to tie all 40. Maybe 5 will do me, LOL. But as for that I've never been out on a boat and fished.
p.s: thanks for correcting me about the Fox Fish. I learnt something new already!

No worries Darda - easy to get them mix up - we've caught a lot of both species - so easy to tell the difference.
I've learn't too - much easier setting rigs and wind ons etc at a study desk that in a choppy sea (and rolling and pitching deck).
It's amazing how many rigs you can go through.

Andy's comment about pipis. I wonder if they are the same pipis that you dig out of the sand on the eastern State beaches. If so, they are fantastic bream bait and great to eat. Do you get them on the beaches around Albany?

Cheers Adam - well plenty of black bums - I caught 6, (overcatch realeased!
), the swallow tail and the King Wrasse and Sandra caught one (really good) black bum - so we got a feed. Shame we didn't get into some big stuff. As you say, there's always next time!
