What have I caught?
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Thu, 2011-06-30 18:26
Caught in 350m off Exmouth today, I've done some research and have come up with my best guess,
Promethichthys prometheus
Roudi escolar
http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?ID=5008&genusname=Promethichthys&speciesname=prometheusAny other opinions?
Full report to follow, it was a good day.

Just one more cast , honest !!!

Did you keep it? Do you know about the issues with eating Escolar?
Not sure if that one has the same issues but can be like Oilfish.

We did keep it and heard the rumours and about regular toilet visits. After filleting one side we decided to donate it to the fish bin.

Man I dont know
But it looks a little like this, and this is a gemfish. It is the underslung jaw that has me beat.

Gemfish for me also.Never
Gemfish for me also.
Never caught one, but from this reference has the same features:
http://www.sea-ex.com/fishphotos/gemfish.htm
underslung top jaw, dark blotch on first dausal fin (½ coverage only), and 3 fang like top teeth evident in the photo!
Sure is one ugly fish, but meant to be terrific to eat!
I just love Exmouth: Its a quaint little drinking town with a fishing problem!

did you notice if the lateral line arced down just after the pectoral fin or further back towards the anal fin?

I just had a look at a better quality photo and the lateral line arcs down underneath the 4th and 5th dorsal spine from the front then runs pretty much down the middle ofthe fish to the tail.
I still think it's too long and thin for a gemfish, plus it doesn't fit in to the distribution area

A bit out there but look at the eyes
in both of the pics on this post and the other the eyes look yellow. Perhaps a result of flash but the ruby's eyes are normal. I think this fish maybe blind and as a result is not in the best of condition. A poor conditioned gemfish?

flash
Say it would be flash, it had those eerie deep water eyes that reflected everything. The fish appeared to be in great condition and was ripe, one big male ready to go.

Look at the pic
with all the fish on the table. Jmo but I think there is something different about this fish's eyes compared to the others. If it was flash why aren't the other fishes eyes on the table the same. All three pics of this fish have the same distinct eye colouration which to me appears different. Why ???

it's 100% flash Alan, here's
it's 100% flash Alan, here's a photo taken without the flash
It had an eye typical of a fish that lived and fed in the dark- designed to capture all the light available. When you caught the sun on it at different angles it showed some pretty cool colours and reflections.

Just looking through my Sea
Just looking through my Sea Fishes book of Southern Australia The common name for this beast is Barracouta (Snoek) not Barracuda .Very closely related to the Gemfish. They swim in large schools in deep water. So Bod Is on the money.
