Finally got my first mackie off the beach. Was taken on a tailor fillet at 10:30pm. Very lucky capture considering the circumstances.

Very Lucky

Mon, 2011-02-21 13:43

I was bitten off on mono only 20 minutes earlier by what we thought was a shark. So on went the steel trace on standard bottom fishing rig as we were targeting mullys and snapper. When I hooked the fish I had just thrown it out and the mackie hit as soon as the bait hit the water then as I tried to gaff the fish off the reef at night it was a bit tricky so I decide to wait for the right wave and grab the trace and drag over the reef. Anyway just as I got the fish on the reef the mackie bit through the steel trace and I then had wrestle the fish back to the beach. Lucky for me the fish was pretty stuffed and didnt have too much petrol in the tank to fight me back.

We got heaps of tailor up to 70cms and I got 60cm snapper about an hour before the mackie.

As for balloons there wasnt much action from the 4-5 groups in the chalets the winds were a bit light and pretty much dropped off each morning around 10am. There was heaps of mackie caught the weekend prior as the reckon the water temp was a bit higher.

Cheers

 Not sure what's more

Not sure what's more impressive, the mackie or the singlet tan!

Good fish mate, sounds like a trip worth while.
