Spot pingers

Spot pingers

Out there today with hlokk and covered a lot of water in the tinny to find some ground. What happens? Some douche convoy of spot pingers come and hop in on our very short drift. Probably about 20 meters away at best. (This photo was took as we left)

There is 361 million square kilometers of ocean, why the hell do these guys think they need to ping a boat half there sizes hard earned spot?

Jokes on them though, the fish where showing but weren't biting. Next time...

I saw that pic and went "did they do it to someone else too?!" then realised it was from the same spot.

We had a cat move EXACTLY upwind of us by about 30m on one drift, then these two groups of idiots come from several miles away, beelined right to us, then both started drifting no more than 20m downwind of us!

Gee, there's some cheeky pricks out there!!

One would think that if you guys were in a tinny, they would have big enough boats to fish further afield?

We had a tagger for a little while today, but we kept moving. It was basically the only boat we saw out there all day apart from fisheries that snuck up on us and could have boarded us without our knowing!! Funny shit!!

Why would you sit there and let them ping you .move away and come back later.only got you self to blame .There are plenty of people willing to jump onto spots if you let them .they don't even get within a km of me and im off.

Yeah, but I dont have any spots worth protecting :p. First time we were fishing the ground and only picked up one BB, so didnt really bother moving as we didnt even know if it was a worthwhile spot.

Sun, 2011-05-22 22:08

The perfect pinger retort, actually I have heard it so many times by people thinking it excuses their dog act of jumping on the drift. If by some chance you do have the spot marked, tough shit someones on it phuck off its very simple. However the majority are scum pingers that deserve a warning shot across the bow & the next one into it.

Good posting of the pic

Sun, 2011-05-22 22:24

It's quite possible they already have the spot, but do you really think so if they pull up exactly in line with you, less than the distance you could throw a sinker? That's like people who go to the hospital who "tripped and fell" in the shower :p.
As you said, if someone there, head off and come back later. What is the chance that someone had the right spot to within 20m just as you're on it, lol. No-one owns any spots in the ocean, but its still pretty rude to just jump in someone elses drift even if you already have the mark. Its not like they were 100m or even 50m away.

Lamby, pity we didnt get pics of the cat too. They were the ones that went exactly updrift of us. They'd come over to where we were and were 100m away fishing. Fair enough, it was near something on the map, and maybe they had the spot, but as soon as they went perfectly updrift of us it was obvious what they were doing.

Yep, i'm so good at it I can steal the spot BEFORE the other boat is even within view, and time it so i'm drifting the exact spot no more than 60 seconds before they were planning too, ahahaha.

Accute Agoraphobia. Its not

Mon, 2011-05-23 14:25

Accute Agoraphobia. Its not their fault, its a human response to open spaces. Its the same animalistic tendancy that results in fish gathering (aggregating) around floating objects, lions around trees, Kiwi's to the dollar etc.

Put a table and chair in the centre of an oval before lunch time at your local school and watch the kids wander over to it and stand around talking etc, purely because it is there.

The 'Old Fashioned' spot pinger will always be around and will get your goat up every time, but the 'New Age' pinger simply uses a decent broad band radar and get 'your' spots anyway.

Mon, 2011-05-23 15:48

pinger!!! big call mate, at the best maybe a pocket boxer(thx lamby) for being so close and if that was a pic of my boat you put up calling me a pinger i would be very very  pissed off.

you mentioned its on the map?

myself and 2 other boats went out from p/peron on sunday morn, while sitting at the ramp waiting for a deckie to show, 2 skippers had a chat about were we were going, guess what??

when we looked on our charts we had the exact same spot marked and its the first time we hav fished together, who pinged who?

it was something on the map that stood out, so proberly 100 others hav it as well.

you say he was in your drift, maybe once he was on the x spot, the drift  is going the same way as yours? did you start from the same x spot?

all that said i agree with him coming to close and he should of done the righty and kept a couple hundred meters away or wait till you moved on.

i just think calling it pinging when its on a chart is a very big call!!

whats the differance if you have 1 or 10 people on board? and as said if you have radar your pinged anyway, one of the boats on sunday had a radar.

I'm sure lots of other people

Mon, 2011-05-23 16:10

I'm sure lots of other people have most of the spots most people fish including the 'secret' ones. No one owns a spot, but do you really want to defend someone who came from over 5nm away to stop within 20m of you not a pinger? It doesnt matter how many people have a mark, you dont head straight for someone and sit in their drift less than 20m away from them. We'd even gone over the ground anyways, and downwind there wasnt any ground, so its not like they knew where it was before heading over anyways. Btw, the 'feature' is over almost a kilometer, lol.

In your example Ron, no one pinged anyone, because neither of you found it by driving right up to another boat that was fishing it. Its a completely different situation (Its not about how many people have it in their gps). Also, I dont think you'll be having any pictures taken of your boat if you're a few hundred meters away, like is courteous.

As for people on board, just something i've noticed. Maybe a coincidence, who knows.

what do ya do?

I'm at the fads and decide to look for a place to bottom bounce, find a wreck listed on the chart plotter about 3 miles away, when i get there a boat is fishing there...the place is on the chart.....can i fish there without the guy going sick....

Marked wrecks are a little

Mon, 2011-05-23 17:14

Marked wrecks are a little different (theres only a handful of them) but the point of not jumping a sinkers throw away in their drift still stands. You can start fishing more than 50m away, not so close that if you had heavier jigs you'd cross lines!

Whether the guy goes sick is up to him though :p. If I was fishing a wreck, and someone came within 50-100m I wouldnt care though. 10-20m, maybe.

Edit: A few times while fishing the barges, we've had someone pull up pretty close downwind so they end up getting in your drift (especially when they chuck a sea anchor out and you dont) which is even worse. Or upwind with no sea anchor when you have one out. A charter boat once did that! We had to move even though we were drifting first. Big no no to interupt someones drift so the other boat that was there first has to move!

Have fished the hillarys barge when it was like a parking lot. 20-30 boats out at least, and you can still start more than 50m away from any other boats and not interupt someones drift. Well, at least most people are capable of doing that :p

I think the marked wrecks are

Mon, 2011-05-23 16:58

I think the marked wrecks are free game and you would be hard pressed to be called a pinger if you lobbed up to the marked wreck and there were other boats there......they are marked and most everyone has them.

BUT....when you are at least 150 m off the wreck, after having spent 30 minutes sounding around to find fish, and two boats come out of nowhere and plonk within 20 m of you...............you gotta ask the question..........funny thing is, most of these guys dont even realise what they are doing is shitty.....most of em wave to you and ask how your going. "Fucking great till you arrived" is the usual answer.....haha.

Anyhow, the real trick is to shoot for the hills when you see em coming.

John

Snapper - didn't call you a pinger, in fact if I would be calling you out fair & square with far worse if that was the case.

Ron- Pocket Boxer is being too kind to these inbreds & personally I don't fish within a 150m radius (or more) of another boat unless its a Fad or a wreck. I think that people are always going to have similar spots marked esp. if it shows promising on the chart but hey if there on it first, no problem all yours I will head off. Absolute mike hunt to do otherwise & ya dead on about the new breed of radar slinging hunts!

hey matthe point about the 2

Mon, 2011-05-23 19:26

hey mat

the point about the 2 skippers having the same spot was just to show you if it looks ok on the map then alot of people hav it as well and not forgeting how long the ffb is!

one more thing that happened on sundy,

we were out at 5.30am, still picth black and we had spread out a little bit around the x spot, i got a call from one of the boats saying he just got a nice pinky and some good shows on the sounder, come over here!!!

so i head off to were i had last seen him...fast...(south from me) spoto his boat in the dark and b lined straight to him.....

f..me when i got there it was not him but somebody else, i stopped dead 50mtrs from him, got on the radio and found he had snuck around the back of me and went north.

so i do a u turn and speed of in the other dirrection,  i bet you the guys on that boat were thinking f n pingers?

but as i said mate, dirty dog for going that close to you for sure, but pininger maybe not.

if you were in the middle of nowhere with no ref to anything on your chart and that happened..fair call on the pinger then for sure.

should of done the righty and stayed a bit further back, but everyone has differant limits on what that should be?

i am gunna get a radar and ping you all and you wont even know it....ha ha ha ha

wonder if they really do it?

Irrespective of whether you call it pinging or nor...it all comes down to common courtesy. We are severely lacking this in todays society.

They may well know that the spot is there, but if you are fishing it first then they should shoulder arms and move on or at least keep their distance.

What is even funnier is when someone drops in on your "drift" when you have simply cut the engine to have lunch...not even a line in the water. That is bloody funny.

spot pingers

Tue, 2011-05-24 23:55

Having read all the comments above on the subject the two posters who mentioned radar have hit the nail right on the head. With the advent of the 16nm radar keeping anything or spot a secret is long past, also with gps it's a simple task to plot your own p[osition and take a bearing of the other boat move a nm in a tangent to the subject boat repeat this 3 times extend the bearing lines you took from each position you plotted and where the lines intersect thats the X spot. Had it done to me a couple of years back, caught up to the fellow club member who got onto "my" spot and asked him how he pingered me from approx 3 miles away and he then explained how he did it. Ended up buying the person a beer at the bar. I totally agree with the comments about coming to with in a stones throw of you, totally unforgiveable and lacking in common manners

I think commen courtesy is a minimum of 200 meteres .I fished on a cray boat and he had all of perth marked on his plotter after 45 yrs crayin and we would go line fishing between pot pullin(old Days) and if we came up to a mark and another boat was on it REC OR PRO we turn and went to the next mark .If every boat does that then ONLY C**TS go that close to you are pingers and yes we did throw sinkers and even rammed one vessel ,accidently off course  ,split his hull open non the less

after reading all the above

Fri, 2012-02-03 21:34

after reading all of the above i think the main point of irritation is that some people do not give a rats about "the right thing to do" and close to an uncomfortable position concerning the boat that was already set up on the drift. This topic has been covered before a couple of months back.Yes we can all get upset and swear and make threats but is that going to resolve the situation (just asking) wouldn't it be better to motor over to the drop in and inform him that what he is doing is so wrong and reall is not cosha. If you get the bird or what ever make the point of fishing only a boats distance from him and see what his reaction is.
