Wish we get trout that big here hey. Absolute stonker.

Maybe Glenn Moore can tell us why they grow massive over there and not here.

Man those New Cal Trout are Huge!!!! Love the different colour of them too. Are they a difffernet sub-species to the ones here in Oz? Or is that just the colouration they are over there? Do you get red ones there?

Trying to convince my fiance that a honeymoon in New Cal would be 'Romantic' :P

Buz, the main species of coral trout caught in New Cal are Blue-spotted coral trout or Chinese footballer trout, they are also known as a Tiger trout. I have seen pictures of the same species caught at the Rowley Shoals but nowhere near the size of the New Caledonia fish. They are quite common in Queensland and are caught to a decent size.

The coral trout we get here are caught in New Cal but are less common than the big Blue-spotted trout....pity that one :D

Wow pretty cool info there

Wow pretty cool info there Steve. I think i do remember seeing a picture of a funny coloured trout like yours on the front of a Western Angler mag a few years ago that was caught from the Rowleys.

Judging from the pics you are getting them in quite shallow water. Bet they must go hard in there, and be a mission to stop them getting to the reefs. Out of interest do you lose many to the reefs.

Also if you dont mind me asking what operator/charter do you use when you are there and where are you located when fishing, like close to a particular city/town on the island? Just trying to sell New Cal to my fiance as a Honeymoon Destination :)

 Buz, My trip was organised

Wed, 2012-06-06 11:46

 Buz,

My trip was organised through Ocean Blue in Sydney, they have a range of packages to different destinations in New Caledonia. The trip I went on was fishing the west coast approximately 3-4hours north of Noumea. The accommodation is comfortable but basic. Looking at their destinations I would probably opt for fishing the north of the island where the accommodation looks to be quite nice and probably better suited to a honeymoon.

Most of our fishing was done inside the lagoon where the water is quite shallow ranging from 1 to about 20m. This particular fish came from outside the reef but only in approximately 5m of water on a sinking stick bait. The trout are generally far easier to get in compared to the GT's and I only had one lure loss in 5 days as a result of a failed knot. We did however have two fish during our trip that made it back to the reef but our guide jumped in with mask and snorkel to coax them out, gotta admire dedication to your job :D
