Happy moments

They are called smudgespot spinefoot's, or commonly known as happy moments.  About 4-5 seconds of happiness followed by 5-10 hours of severe pain.

Indescribable

The "happy" part is where you dance around like a lunatic trying anything you can possibly think of to take your mind away from the pain. I settled on trying to hurt the other hand (stupid I know) to take my mind of my thumb and arm.
Its certainly the most paiful thing I have ever encountered.

That's one hell nice fish to eat and one of the worst if stung by those spines. . .

Macky Islands Jetty

Fri, 2010-01-22 08:50

Went down for a squid off the service jetty a few years ago. We were told in the induction onto the island if you go fishing off the jetty watch out for these little fish called happy moments. My mate came walking over to me with a fish in his hand. Is this one of these fish they were talking about? Then before he new it he was spiked. He said he had few seconds of happiness followed by about 5 hours of pain.

in asia we call them spotted

Tue, 2012-03-20 19:56

in asia we call them spotted rabbit fish, because they mainly feed on seaweed or veg we throw away.

one of the pricey fishes during our new year

Happy Moments

I went for a prawn dive in the Swan on Friday night and saw 2 of these - first time I have seen them there. Thanks to this forum, I knew what they were!  So it would seem they are spreding themselves around!

Prawns

Wed, 2012-03-21 08:46

Got almost a kilo Milsey. Lots of small river prawns, not so many kings at the moment. Only got about 20 king prawns and about 40 river - then there were the ones that were so small they escaped through the net!

Wed, 2012-03-21 06:40

i too came to grief on the mackie islands jetty! i was pissed at the time and it was still bloody painfull! i have been told if you get stung squeeze as much blood out of the wound as possible this helps to flush the poison out! stay well clear if possible

They're sold as Black

Wed, 2012-03-21 08:10

They're sold as Black Trevally in some places down in the south-eastern states.  Supposed to be good to eat but heaven help me if I ever get that desperate.

Just pee on the sting

Wed, 2012-03-21 15:04

Just pee on the sting area,The warm helps ease the pain.then kill it with beer.
I know at least one of the methods works

A few years ago I caught them

Wed, 2015-08-26 09:06

A few years ago I caught them at the North mole while trying for whiting

Didn't know what they were at the time and I held them in my hand while pulling the hook out.

Makes me shiver when I think how close I came to getting spiked, guess i was just extra lucky
