sharks are highly over rated, swirl reef is a not to uncommon mack spot, so alot of spearos will dive it with cameras to get footage. we saw a great white 4m ish at the beagle islands about 500m from the short in like 8m of water.. didnt really bother us, just ate a 20kg plus sambo that was on the end of a mates spear then swam casually about 8m from us then just minded its own business and left, if i had a camera could have gotten a photo easy. most sharks are not aggresive just come in to check whats going on and if theres fish then can grab, i can fully see this photo as being legit.
1) firstly in my opinion sharks are not overrated i think they are bloody amazing creatures and highly underrated.
2) this is a photo i took a while ago from a cage, this is how white pointers "check whats going on" obviously they have no hands so are forced to test bite to investigate things as shown below. unfortunately this test bite is often fatal to humans.
this photo shows another test bite, luckily the boat was ok ;)
have had 2 school mates taken by pointers who did not live to tell the tale, played footy with both back in SA. One was surfing, one was a commercial abalone diver, pretty sure if they were around theyd differ on your opinion about taking photos of life threaening creatures without any protection ;)
to clarify im not afraid of sharks, i dive for a living, i have a respect for them and if i did see a 4 metre + pointer mid water i wouldnt be rooting around with my camera but keeping a very close eye on it and would have a knife in my hand as opposed to a nikon :P
below is a couple more pics i took from the safety of a cage :D
if the photo is legit....well each to their own, its your life :)
Most people wouldnt stop to get a pic but some would, heard it from a few sources now, sounds kosher to me. Lucky bastards, i`ve seen whites from the boat would love to see one in the water.
Thats awesome, would certainly get the blood pumping, pretty sure there is a thread on WADivers relating to this at swirl reef assuming this would be the pic certainly confirmed as a GWS then
couple of good mates were diving a baitball at the abrolhos the other week. one with camera one with gun - big bronzies and hammerheads galore mixed in with tuna of a few different species and macks.... Got some great footage and dale even speared a nice Yellowfin Tuna. Got home and watching the footage - there at the bottom of the screen ghosting past before they'd even contemplated shooting a fish or anything - 12ft white.... didnt even see it! Luck or just proving the shark didnt feel like a feed of human? Either way it was pretty Fing cool to see and some bragging rights for them!
the boys were keen to stop for a happy snap thats for sure.
yeah the beagle isl is a crazy place for GWs. craying outa there for the whites and my boss was saying how many GWs hes seen on the inside of the island and the passage perfect hunting area for seals! they stop in there on their migration through to the abrohlos every year and ive never seen bronzys so big as the ones at the abrohlos in the passage between nth island and west wallaby. my other deckie has footage of them feeding on tuna heads we were throwin them. that real dark brown color to em!

a big part of me is thinking Bullshit
or would most people stop to take a photo if in the water without a cage and a pointer was swimming that close to them.
not saying its not possible, im sure there are more and more sharks around rotto that anyone is aware of but still think this one is a bit of BS :P

fatboy you are dead set 100%
fatboy you are dead set 100% safe, even GW have some taste, but the shark shield might act a bit like a tenderizer so they might be tempted.

I only need to be able to swim faster thatn Matt, then it's all good! I think with the right motivation, aka GW, I could pull a few knots under water
