Story

Tue, 2008-12-02 17:51

Alright, I guess its time for the story. I didn't take the 3rd mono 10kg troll outfit as we already had enough reels on board for popping/bottom bouncing and decided to get greedy and put the torque out (braid). Well, of course the billie has to hit that and start jumping towards the boat at a rapid rate of knots. Immediately we knew it was a good fish, thinking around the 80 mark. Soon as we had the fish clear of the spread we slowed down, unfortunately he didn't and I was soon onto the backing and the last few wraps of mono. Azza quickly turned the boat and had me retrieving line and with half the braid back on we thought this was going to be a nice an easy capture. I handed the rod over to the missus and let her fight him for 20 minutes whilst I prepared my underwater camera and diving gear to get some footage. After another spooling run we started thinking it was a little bigger than first thought. Taking over the rod again the next hour and a half was a tug of war in a strong current slowly manouvering the boat to try and plane the fish up. A near fully locked drag and both thumbs on the spool for the whole time saw me with red raw thumbs and a stuffed back. I decided to hand the rod over to Azza to try and turn his head and get him the final bit to the surface. (Trying to deadlift a 120kg fish on a jig stick isn't the easiest thing) After half an hour Azza finally got him to the boat and in our excitement we didn't decide to position the boat on the other side just to grab the leader and grab him. BAD CALL. Az gave me the rod back and he took the leader, with one final kick the fish powered back under the boat and the hook pulled. The fish then floated to the surface momentarily on the other side of the boat and with some quick driving we tried to manouever around to grab him before he disappeared. Not being able to do a tight enough circle with him slowly kicking and about to sink I decided to jump in and try and grab him. (70m line) As I put my flipper on Azza and Renae called 'shark' and thinking I've swum with a few I decided I'd go anyway. Within 2 seconds of entering the water (crystal clear blue) I saw 2 bronzies circling on the outer, turning to the left to try and spot the marlin I came face to face with an angry 6-7 ft bronzie that instead of eating me decided to chew on the prop. Lets just say I was outa the water before the squid ink started to run. So we lost the fish and it probably became shark food (which is only the second time I've seen sharks on a marlin out of Exmouth) but I was sorta glad it was him and not me. Unfortunately no photo's of the fish as it all happened too fast when he came to the surface, but lets just say I've got some pretty good memories and the line burn on both thumbs to prove it! :)
