Trip planning

In the early stages of planning our yearly trip to Gnaraloo and to say I'm a little excited is an understatement. It's still 3 months away but I like to prepare well in advance to make the trip as drama free as possible. So wondering what  tips etc you might have for a trip away. Mainly things  that streamline the trip, I'm always up for suggestion and what a better place than the forum to get it. One thing I do is pre cook a few dinners and freeze to save precious filleting and drinking time. Anyway fire away!

Mooring

Tue, 2015-05-05 21:15

Make a mooring saves dragging the boat in and out every day this was the first year we moored the boat and it made life real easy .

the track from the cabins to the bay is shocking the worst I have seen it the day I dragged the boat to the bay took me 30 mins very badly corrugated and broke both guards on the trailer so thank god for the mooring .

left all the fishing gear in the boat and just took down bait esky and drinks

Cheers Colin, hopefully he grades the track before we get there, last year was the best we'd ever seen it but crap weather. Hope we get best of both worlds this year. Mine's no real drama to bring in each day, got the anchor bitches for that ;)

Tue, 2015-05-05 21:39

You can borrow my mooring setup andy.  boat swings free and you can pull it in and out from the beach.  Two anchors, chain and a pully out deep, one anchor and star picket on the beach.  100 m of 12 mm rope looped in between connected by a heavy d shackle.  heavy chain to the boat plus a safety rope as well.

How many

Wed, 2015-05-06 07:12

If you have two or three groups coming from different locations and all bringing their own tucker, you will find that you have more of one thing that's not needed. What we used to do when I was living down south was to all meet up here in town and do one lots of shopping and split the cost between all groups, what was left over was either split up or left behind for the next lot of visitors. We bought all our booze at the same time, saves carting it a thousand km and its the same price as down there anyway.

Get in touch with the station well ahead of your visit and get them to arrange fuel to be carted in for you.

When you travel back and forth from the bay each day hook up the drag and grade the track as you go. Its usually by the gate near the shearing shed.

We always filled up every little bit of spare freezer and ice box space with ice in Carnarvon eliminating the need to try to make it, as you used it the space was filled with fillets. The station generator used to shut off at around 2300 till 0630 so we'd run our genny to provide the freezers with a bit extra and whoever needed a leak during the night would top it up for another couple of hours running.

not a complete list , but

Wed, 2015-05-06 08:53

not a complete list , but might be worth considering

on all our trips away I would take a full set of tools , as well as the below items

1800kg trolley jack & small 45cm square piece of rubber belting matt for use under the trolley jack in soft/wet sand etc
spare trailer hub with studs and nuts and bearings ,as well as u bolts and plates etc
spare trailer spring , usually bolted down to the mesh under the tandem boat trailer
small electrical kit , fuses, tape , pliers trailers plugs etc
cable ties
spare winch strap for the boat
power steering fluid , brake fluid ,marine grease, normal grease , 5 litres engine oil and 2 litres gear oil , 10 litres fresh water
canvas bag containing a snatch strap , big d shackles and 15 metres of 6mm chain , [yes chain ,it doesn't break and doesn't knot up ,very handy ]
stauns, and compressor, tyre gauge
long handled post hole shovel
jar of hand cleanser/ degreaser for after a job is done to cleanup

a spare set of bungs for the boat too & one trailer light ,
a good torch, spotty and a dunny roll in a plastic bag !!!! keep them 2 items close and handy lol ,

I mostly towed a tandem boat trailer, ,this was a normal travel pack as well as other stuff , amazing how handy it is , often you don't need it but you can stop and help some one else who might in the caravan park or on the side of the road

I still carry most of this , as we do a regular run down south with the boat over summer , on a 200 km round trip its handy

packed in carefully it doesn't take that much space

Wed, 2015-05-06 10:15

I dont know what the facilities are like where you stay, but if rubbish is an issue, bring beer in cans instead of stubbies.  They take up a hell of a lot less room once drunk and you can crush them.   It makes a big difference in places where we have to take our rubbish out with us.

Like others have said, premake rigs put them in sandwich bags.  Make your own ice using containers, salt mulies/bait.

Our usual precooked meals are curry, bolognese sauce & meatballs, lasagne.  Nothing beats a curry after a big days fishing!

trailer paint

Wed, 2015-05-06 10:47

I would paint the main frame of your trailer with cheap water base paint which can be washed off after the trip but stops most chips and staining on the main draw bar from the lime stone track , keeps the trailer looking in better condition and problems with the galvanising lifting etc

I take the fish smoker to steep point in case the boys catch any herring off the beach.  Also take some flour and oil to beer batter any sand whiting caught the same way.  The fish wings go onto the bbq plate.  we do this in the afternoon after filleting and we're relaxing having a beer.  compliments the chorizo, or dip and crackers.

Wed, 2015-05-06 18:48

Andy this is probably not really meant for a seasoned boater like yourself but :

A good thing is pack your trailer correctly!

Dont overpack, too much weight in the boat will see a split trailer or worse a split hull !

Once you hit the gravel let your tires down to soften the ride. Let them down to the same footprint as the car is always a good idea!

Road train

Wed, 2015-05-06 19:49

With all the suggestions coming in you will need a triple road train to cart it all---and they are not allowed on the Gnaraloo road.

In over twenty trips in there from Two Rocks, the only 2 times I had trouble was on a modified trailer using posi torque suspension and I had to do a run in to Carnarvon to pick up replacement units. None of the others had any major problems other than the stones chopping the trailer light wire to bits or mudguards falling off.
The other was a blown leg on a mercruiser and got on the phones and had another sent up from Perth for collection in town the next day.

If you do your maintenance and don't bust a gut going in there is no reason why you should need everything including the kitchen sink.

Hey Andy,

Always pack the spare wheel bearings into new hubs, saves time on the side of the road, spare sunnies in the boat, ALWAYS put your hat and sunnies somewhere safe as the sun goes down, nothing worse than looking for respite for your eyes first thing in the morning when the head hurts as well, don't play leap frog with unicorns, good jumper leads, plenty of cable ties, sikka and gaffa tape, tim tams and red wine for tim tam slammers, camera batteries.

Finally, never run out of booze.

have a good time!
