Frozen

If they are frozen then I don't see a problem

I used to take frozen fish fillets to Sydney for my daughter, the only time I had a problem was when I had ice packs in and they said it had to be dry ice or none at all so no leakage can occur

No seawater

I've taken frozen whole crays and also just frozen tails  to Sydney in my checked baggage. No  problem, just no seawater etc allowed. I just froze them  a few days beforehand, then rapped in bubble rap and that into a soft esky bag with a small hard ice brick. It was about 7 hours from time I left home to reaching my destination before I could pop into a freezer there, but they were still frozen solid.

Made me check

I thought that might be the case but when I looked up the possession rules online it said "This means you are able to take rock lobster tails to a friends house for consumption". So to me that meant it OK to take them to a friend in Sydney for a feed. The only restriction was that they must be accompanied. Just had a look online again and itstill says the same. Reckon it is OK? The rules I looked at were here,  https://www.fish.wa.gov.au/documents/recreational_fishing/licences/rec_licence_rock_lobster.pdf  and the bit about taking tails with you to a freind's place  is at the bottom of Page 5.

From fisheries web site last paragraph

This means the maximum number of rock lobsters (all species combined) you may have in your possession, even if they were not all taken from the sea on the same day.

A Statewide possession limit of 24 rock lobsters (all species combined) per person applies, including at your permanent place of residence - which does not include a tent, vehicle, boat or caravan (unless you permanently live in a caravan).

You can only be in possession of rock lobster tails on the landward side of the high water mark (on land). Rock lobster must be in whole form when on a vessel unless it is being prepared for immediate consumption or the part of the rock lobster is not a tail. The landing of rock lobster in whole form enables compliance staff to check the size of your catch.

Rock lobsters MUST only be transported whole, so it is illegal to take stored tails away from your principle place of residence.

Conflict

Wed, 2024-10-30 11:33

We'll both statements come from Fisheries web site and clearly are at odds. One explicity says you can and the other says you can't. Can you put up the link where it says what you indicated is no transport of tails?

I was guided by what I read on the Fisheries site, but obviously one version of the rules, as they've written online, is not correct, unless one is out of date. However the rules I referred to are current for 2024-25, so maybe things have changed recently. It still says the crays must be kept whole while at sea or transported on the boat, but once landed you can store 24 tails and also it is OK to take tails to a friend's place.

I would just print out that

I would just print out that particular page and have it on you if questioned. If it's on their official website then they can't argue misinformation.

Good idea

Yep, given there might be a mix up, if I take any tails east again I'll take a copy of the rules as written in the "Rock lobster Recreational fishing guide 2024–25" with me. Have downloaded it from the Fisheires website, but next time I go to a tackle shop I'll grab a hard copy, as its there in black and white  "This means you are able to take rock lobster tails to a friends house for consumption or use rock lobster heads as bait. ". Much easier to travel with just tails.

 Sorry but your last sentence

Wed, 2024-10-30 12:47

Sorry but your last sentence is  wrong, this is from the actual guide.

You can only be in possession of rock lobster tails on the landward side of the high water mark. Rock lobster must be in whole form when on a vessel unless it is being prepared for immediate consumption. Note: The landing of rock lobster in whole form enables DPIRD Fisheries and Marine Officers to check the size of your catch. This means you are able to take rock lobster tails to a friends house for consumption or use rock lobster heads as bait. Rock lobster must not be transported unaccompanied, such as by a courier service

Don't understand

Wed, 2024-10-30 14:03

If itsays you can travel and taketails to a friend's house for consumption, surely it's the same when you accompany them on a flight?

I took those words from directly the guide too. When it says "This means you are able to take rock lobster tails to a friends house for consumption " I took that as meaning I can take tails to a friend for consumtion, as long as I take them personally.

Is that incorrect?

That's the way I read it.

That's the way I read it. Your mate's house could be down the street or 2000km's  away, same difference.

Agree

That's how I took it when I checked before flying east. Was wanting to do the right thing.  Took a couple of jumbos for their novelty value, but the rest of the feed just tails to avoid the unwanted weight of the heads in the baggage. Nonetheless, will keep the guide brochure on me if I fly east with some tails again. Might also double check with an email to Fisheries, but that might also be a rabbit hole.

No worries

I took a Yeti bag full o Coral Trout fillets from Cairns to Perth a while go. Chucked it in my checked baggage, no one gives a rats as long as it's under the baggage limit. Everything was still frozen by the time we arrived.

I travel by plane with samples in eskies for work a lot - they just dont want you to use ice because it can leak out of the esky. We just use freezer bricks.
