G'day all this is my first post but have been reading some of the previous posts about shark bay area.I am heading to shark bay soon (december) and i want to see weather i could pop over to steep point and dirk hartog island.i have hired a 21 foot boat but i have heard at this time of year it is very winding and nearly impossible to cross out to dirk hartog island.I just wanted to know your opinion on crossing from denham to steep point and weather it is possible?
cheers and i hope to meet you all

Shark Bay winds
Hi Lochie,
welcome aboard!
Winds in Shark Bay in summer are predominantly from the S or SW and are generally pretty strong. You will have to play it day-by-day when you are there, but I would be expecting not to get too many opprotunities to get across to Steep Point or Dirk Hartog, especially if your were thinking of heading to Turtle Bay on the north end of Dirk Hartog. That is a 2-3hr run depending on conditions. If the wind is from the SW, you could tow the boat across to the Monkey Mia side, but you generally have to have local knowledge to get fish consistently on that side. And beware of the pink snapper restrictions in both gulfs. Check the Fisheries website before going.
