RST

Knocked off the Recreational Skipper's Ticket today. Did the theory and then the practical on the Swan today with an assessor from Challenger TAFE.

Pretty happy to have got it out of the way, and at a $100 all up, can't really complain about the cost.

Still trying to get my head around the fact that you don't need to carry an anchor/rope on the Swan River. Bizarro!

The Rush!

From what the assessor was saying, there's going to be a truckload of people all trying to get it done at the same time (last minute).

When it gets to that stage, I'd be surprised if anyone is doing it for $100. Have already heard tales of people being charged $2-300.

Dinkum?

Is the RST fair dinkum. Who knows, but is a step in the right direction.

IMO things that should be covered include safe anchoring around reefs, travelling in a following sea etc.

even the basics have got to be better than someone buying a first boat and doing silly stuff in it. had to rescue some fool a few years back that bought a big (about 25 foot) cruiser and decided that the abrolhos islands would be nice for a first trip. he had never driven a boat bigger than a tinnie before. was soooo tempted to throw him over board and make him swim the 30nm home.
anyway in my opinion anything is better than nothing

Even the basics are better than nothing but if we are going to have some sort of Skippers Ticket why not have one that may save your life. I don't want to stop anyone enjoying boating or make it any harder than it should be. I remember being out on the water for the first time in my own boat, it was fantastic fun but also a bit nerve wracking as I didn't have a clue what I was doing. Would have been nice to have someone show me what to do to stay safe. The RST goes part way towards that but leaves a big gap in practical safety at sea when the going gets a little hairy. Maybe I think too much but maybe that's not such a bad thing when I put to sea.
