Marine paint would be a better option but if you did the prep work properly you shouldn't have too many issues, plenty of boat out there that have been painted with house paint.

if its not enamel it wont last. if you asked for enamel and paid for enamel take it back and tell them you want your $ back . go elsewhere and start all over

You can actually get water based enamels. Its pretty much just starting to mean high gloss sometimes. The chick at the shop might not have understood the differences and thought all enamels were the same? I dont know if the water based ones are suitable. Perhaps not.
