outboard suggestions for 13 foot tinny

was looking at a 25hp etec, are they any good, any bad reports or suggestions on other good motors? Thinking the 4 strokes may be a bit heavy, cheers

Looked at getting a etec 25hp for my dory, they're quite expensive i think i got quoted $5500 for a 25hp. If your thinking about fuel consumtion I settled on a 3cyl 30hp yamaha 2stroke gets about 2 1/2 nm per litre, planes the boat with only the slightest twist of the throttle and tops out at 25knots. Fantastic 2 strk motor but even 30hp could use a bit more top end, boat flys at 1/2 throttle but the difference of 2/3rds throttle and full is only about 4 knots, would think you'd only be pushing about 19-20 knots with a 25hp

What type of tinny is it? Have seen some that would safely handle a 60hp and others that 15hp would be over powered. If its a new model it should have a recommended power range on its id plate other wise seek advice from a recognised dealer.

For a make of motor , check out the etecs, I have a 60hp and its fuel economy is better than a mates honda of the same hp rating without the added servicing costs. The other two strokes cannot match the etecs or 4 strokes in quiet running or fuel savings

if you want a good basic no frills and relaible motor check out the yamaha cv25 or 30hp motors. they are the same motor but i think different reeds in the carby or something? they are a good workhorse motor but you have to mix your own fuel with them and they are probably about half the price of what you are looking at?  good luck.

For a small motor I would definately go with the older tech 2 strokes. A 25 or 30hp uses bugger all fuel anyway.

Ive heard etecs are good, but dont like murky/brackish water for some reason so if your using it in ocean water you should be fine. In saying that I would still not buy 1. Yamaha all the way.

after reading hundreds of reviews and asking a million people it was between the yammy and suzuki and I have decide to go for the suzuki 30hp 2 stroke for the following - its quieter, more fuel efficient, lighter and cheaper, all reviews said it performed better in 'dirty' water ie rivers etc. I havent heard a bad thing about them yet other than its not as user friedly as the yammy, gear changing and tilt lever positions etc but maybe there is something i havent heard that you could let me know - CHEERS.

get a propellor matched to your boat and if the standard prop is different keep it as a spare.

You will be amazed how a well matched prop make the boat run economical and you will get maximum speed out of the setup.

match the prop

Mon, 2011-02-28 15:16

 Yes,

I've recently changed the prop on my 30hp Johno 2 stroke, it now gets out of the water in not much more than it's length under full throttle, where before it would take a while to plane.

Mate I have a 15hp Yammi 2

Mon, 2011-02-28 15:35

Mate I have a 15hp Yammi 2 stroke on my 12 foot tinny and it sings along! I bought the whole lot second hand from a guy in Onzlow and he said it cost about $2500 from Karatha so will be a fair bit cheaper in perth.. Never had a problem with it, it uses only a breath of fuel and goes like the clappers....

brings back some good memories of being a teenager in esperance. my mate bought a 20hp mercury for an old 12ft dinghy they had laying around we use to carry the dinghy down to the beach then carry the outboard down and off we'd go, we had heaps of fun.
