Life bait well set up on boat
Submitted by glastronomic on Sat, 2012-01-21 20:24
Looking at making a lifebaitwell set up on my boat and looking for some input how to do it the correct way!
I did buy a 80ltr bin and a bilgepump I had laying around, but the 80ltrs of seawater on the marlin board makes the boat to heavy on the back

Make sure its round, corners
Make sure its round, corners kill fish. I see a couple styles in use, one is just a beer barrel ~30-50l, with water pumped in and runs out the overflow. Others just drill the whole barfrel and fill it continuously.
Another thing that would probably help is black gelcoat on the inside (to prevent light penetration), and white on the outeside (to keep them cool), insulation would also be a big plus.

Couple of different ideas on
Couple of different ideas on what colour the inside of a bait tank should be. Half say black to keep the livies in the dark and therefore less stressed and the other camp says white and bright so the livies stay brightly coloured and more active.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

i say why do with lives
what you can do with lures? And or dead baits.Leaves more room on the boat for other toys.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

it is placed here.already
it is placed here.
already welded an outboard motor bracket to it with a divider to put a live bait well.
So it does not take any space inside the boat other than the 3th battery it will run on.
plus water cascading out of the bin/well is of no concern.

Probably not a bad choice
Probably not a bad choice although you may want to try to paint it so it doesn't get hot.

The cheapest easiest way with a marlin board
like your is go to the supermarket and grab a couple of the white foam boxes for vegies.Use a heated rod to put a few holes in along the back at the top for the water flow.Get a spray bar and a transom mount bilge pump, make sure you mount it on a pickup for under way.I built a marine ply tray that mounted for it to sit in.When the box craps itself it will cost a under $5 to replace.I personally think the whole dark vs light and round vs square is crap.It is all about water flow.

Oh i forgot
Try not to handle the livebait at capture and get a little net from a pet store to catch them with. Also move slow with the net in the tank.If you trash around trying to catch one livey you will stress the rest.I made a small gaudge dehooker that saved handling of the bait and it makes the gathering process far quicker.
