Lee precision lead melting pot
Submitted by Yewiefish85 on Wed, 2024-06-12 04:10
Hi guys, just wondering if anyone out there knows where (preferably online or somewhere that will post)that I would be able to get one of these pots, I'm not fussed if it's the 10lb or 20lb version, just can't seem to find anyone who has them in stock, I know there are similar products available but the amount of sinkers that I will be making I just can't justify the cost

Lead pot
I made lots of projectiles for my 45cal and all I used was a case iron pot on a gas burner .l recommend you do it out side as it makes a lot of fumes .

I just use a stainless steel
I just use a stainless steel bowl with a lid over it then use a small stainless jug using vice grips with the jug to pour. A small 2 burner camping gass cook top is ideal . Once you get the hang of it you can pump out lots in a short amount of time.

Thanks for the advice, I
Thanks for the advice, I have previously poured snapper leads up to 24oz with a ladle but I'm more wanting something to make smaller sinkers that I use more often that I seem to be struggling with pouring with the ladle ( maybe my lead isn't hot enough)

I have also found pouring
I have also found pouring lead on cold days you need to heat the moulds up more often. If you work it right once your mould is hot and you keep a good pace in the moulds you may not have to heat it a second time

LEE
I got mine direct from LEE in the US they send all their stuff by mail to OZ you can even get custom stuff made if you want.
I have bought about 10 sets of Dies from them for reloading and the pot, a reloading kit, sizing dies to swag the bullets to the precise diam of your gun barrel and their lube etc, check out the US home website to see how much it will cost from them, I got most stuff in a week or 2.
I would lend you mine but it looks like you need one to resupply when needed.
Did you try Barry's firearms , as they are the main pistol guys in Perth and most pistol shooters get into reloading to save costs, I went fron $1 a shot for some pistols to just over $10 to reload 100 bullets by making my own. I was shooting over 10,000 rounds a year when my son was shooting with me, got a few club trophy's while using my own bullets.

Yeah mate, this is where it looks to be heading, unfortunately for me I live about 1700km from Perth and not a shooter so am unfamiliar with what gun shops are around, i have emailed a few shops and also the businesses listed as Australian distributors from the Lee website, both don't import them anymore, wasn't given a reason why tho, will try Barry's

I recently cut the top off a small gas cylinder and use a gas burner underneath. use the top as a lid.
Ladle the lead with an aluminium ladle__ WITH A WELL INSULATED HANDLE!!

Moulds
I would lay the bullet / sinker mould on top of the melt pot to keep it hot if I had to do something or if I had to wait for lead to melt when I topped it off, another thing is to smoke the mould if the sinkers etc start to stick. (soot from a burning flame like a lighter or candle)
If you want the lead to be a little harder you can drop them into a bucket of water straight from the mould so it does a cold quench, it can harden lead up to 15% if I remember correctly. (been a long time since I read the LEE reloading book that has it all in there)
I started making sinkers with my dad 50 years ago then bullets as well when I got into shooting in 1980's (saying that makes me feel real old). I have a heap of them to melt down probably into sinkers .
I have 4 buckets in my shed with snapper sinkers in one and 4 / 5 / 6 ounce star sinkers in the other 3 ,, if you want smaller star sinkers just don't fill the mould up to the top (yes that's just common sence), I bought a shit load of cheap barrel swivels to put in them to tie the line to instead of trying to make them from wire, I recon it saves a bit of line twist too if they roll around in a rip or gutter.
Cheers, Brendan.
