Knots

When rigging up for live bait, is it better to tie braid to mono, or braid to swivel then mono

what knot would I use if I tie braid to mono ?

How long should mono leader be for live baiting

Personally I like to have my braid tied to a short mono leader, then tied to a swivel, with anothyer mono leader tied to the other end of the swivel.
If I am tying braid to mono I use a double uni.

Chief I used to tie directly

Chief I used to tie directly to the swivel and use a 4 foot length of mono trace and as Colin mentioned use a double uni with about 10 twists.

Life is short so live it fast

Try testing those double

Try testing those double unis out, they often dont pull as good as they look. As the link says "the Double Uni Knot is not recommended for super-line work, even with extra line wraps" Wink

GT knot for most stuff for me, otherwise a improved albright in lighter lines (though I need to get better at tightening it without weakening the mono). GT takes a bit longer to tie, but its super strong and if you tie it to the same strength mono, the terminal knot will often break first keeping your leader (which means you rarely need to tie it). If you break a GT knot, you're fishing waaay too much drag.

That being said, I do like using double unis when SP fishing for bream as when you snag, it'll break there and not on the leader knot :p

Braid to swivel, i'd try a trilene knot, triple palomar or even better a bimini to catspaw

Length of the leader: what are you catching? You'd need to use one if you are using on of those clip on sliding bait rigs. I assume a standard rig though?

Test all your knots before you go out if you're not confident.

Spot on TT

Spot on TT, just trim your tags right up close to the knot (they wont slip) and you'll be set to go.  You need to clip the tags other wise they will catch on your guides and cause some horrible braid knots / mess.

Thats OK TT you enjoy your shark if you get oneLaughing

Im on nights now but maybe later in the week I may be tempted to once again fish from a beach..its been a long time.

That snelled hooks on a wire trace is what i use when Im out very deep as everthing out there bites your hooks off so I already had a few made up. So it was no problem to give you one mate.

Good luck and dont forget the photos. Just be careful. You will be surprised just how strong a 4 foot shark is when you try to grab it.

Thanks Mark

I just made up my first one, Mustad live bait 8/0 on 60lb stainless steel trace with swivel, trace is about 850mm long

hope this will hold a live Tailor in place if I hook it above the lateral line
