knot strength chart
Submitted by rac on Mon, 2022-02-21 16:00
i've been having some bad days with braid (inconsistent knot failure, difficult to tie in poor light and wind) so started googling knots for braid then came across this site:
Strength Chart for the Best and Strongest Fishing Knots | Knots For Fishing
some common knots i like perform particularly poorly.... i thought this could be a useful resource for anyone else looking for alternative knots to what they might have become accustomed to.
i certainly got some ideas out of it.

More than 100%?
I'm skeptical of knots that claim to be more than 100% of stated breaking strain.

yeah in order for that to happen the line itself exceeded its rating by over 30%. didnt see how they came about that, probably buried in a video.

Can happen with braid
Often braid breaks way above it's stated strength so it's possible to test a knot that breaks high as well.

nope
have not wet a line since i made that post. have had a short hiatus from fishing for about 25yrs or so, in that time this thing called braid became popular so re-learning all these things everyone else already knows... i.e. just how bad it is with abrasion, and doing some tests at home looks like i needed to roughly double the number or wraps on a half blood knot/improved clinch knot to not slip.
i've decided my eyesight and finger dexterity just isnt up to handling braid say less than 12lb on light gear outdoors. its just too fine.
on the topic of knots, what do people like to do with heavy leaders, say 80lb mono/flouro? i dont have any issues with these failing at all, i just cant make them look "pretty", i know the fish dont give a sh8t but...

If you havnt fished for
If you havnt fished for years use the basics. Learn how to tie a good back to back uni knot for leader to braid. It is still my number one go to knot for most situations if i dont need a long leader. Use a uni knot for tieing braid to swivels if you want to do that just use a few more turns . Blood knots and most other mono knots are useless in braid. Learning how to tie fg knots is not simple and unless you do them regularly they are not fun. Use a uni knot for heavy leaders. Anything over 100 lb it is about the only knot that ties well. A three turn uni knot in anything over 100lb. Dont use clips on braid. I cringe when I see clips.

yeah i think i need to break
yeah i think i need to break my habit (which is hard because i do it in auto pilot) of blood knots and swap it out to unit knots. will give it a go next time i am making rigs.
I tied a few FG's following this example:

There’s different knots
For different fish . . Over a fair few years can not beat FG . For drifting . 2 to 3 meter 130 lb shock leader . Never get bricked under ledges .. braid doesn’t go near reef . What do you target

the incidents of braid
the incidents of braid failure where one of the following;
- shore based rock/reef for tailor. abrasion i think. so to counter that i ran a long 20lb mono leader (~7m) and a short 80lb leader for teeth.
but being LB not sure if the length will always avoid rock because the angle the line is at and the holes the bait is drifting down into. on this rod reel i have now ditched the braid and just run 15lb mono (light beach rod), decided I cant be a8sed doing FG's for the sake of a few casting meters and extra meters on the spool. i dont spin with lures often enough to justify the casting gains.
- getting taken under a jetty. abrasion.
- getting taken by rays, on "whiting/herring" outfits. knot slip. <- this one here is where i find hard to tie because the diameter is so thin, i cant recall exactly but its probably 6lb braid. in hindsight i wont run that light again. although of course i was bit ungunned in a ukraine / russian way there....

It's like with my welding LJ , I try to do a better one everytime. Once you get the hang of tying the knot it's very satisfying.

Knots and welding
Only use the uni knot with more turns when using braid, never used a leader. Braid straight to swivel then patanoster rig down from there.
My welds are gorilla weld, BIG, strong and ugly

Ha ha as long as they hold
Ha ha as long as they hold mate. I've just literally done two weeks solid welding, the most I've done in years. All DNV compliant and lifting eyes ultrasonically tested, see how good I am next week when the NDT guy comes and tests them all , I'm not shitting myself

Heading north in a couple of
Heading north in a couple of weeks to the land of sharks and more sharks! Does anyone have a really quick braid to leader knot that they use instead of FG or SC knots? The GT knot looks good but only for a short leader for obvious reasons. I will do a bunch for practice before I head up but I know from experience in the middle of a hot bite on a moving boat I sometimes opt for a faster but weaker knot just to get back in the water.
I've tied FG before but haven't tried the Sc yet. It looks a bit easier but time will tell.

No takers on this one? To me the best quick knot in a hot bite is back to back Uni with a short leader. Can tie in no time and very reliable.

could probably make (or
could probably make (or find?) a small jig to help hold and keep stuff tight while doing the wraps. something you could hold between the knees for instance when you dont have a table to work with.
i do it freestanding but same with you, would not be happy doing it moving around....

I think there is a bobbin you can buy that helps with this knot. Might look into it.

can tie em in the dark, on a moving deck, takes less than 2 minutes
IMHO u cant beat em
spider hitch was used by quite few mates before FG
i reckon FG is quicker

Yeah I guess that's what I need to do. I always spend soem time practising knots before a big trip. I probably only use FG and Uni for most things, and bimini with wind-on leaders for billfish.

Fg is good for casting but
Fg is good for casting but if not done tight and correctly have a tendancy to unravel. My son found that out in the last few days fishing the WhitSundays. He said you literally need to tighten the braid till it's kinda translucent so you know it's biting into the mono.

Yeah I found that out too
Yeah I found that out too Andy! Thankfully not by losing a fish or a lure but I've had a couple come loose. With the amount of sharks up north I'll probably get very skilled at tying them!

A bit rough
can help. I tie FG for casting small lures, using 30-60lb leader. Had a few unravel in the early days, but now I just run the last 20cm of the leader lightly through a folded piece of 1200 wet and dry before tying, then usually add a drop of glue. Maybe overkill, but no probs since.

FG or PR knot
I went from tying FG knots a few years back to tying PR knots (using a cheap Ebay PR bobbin).
But recently have decided to go back to the FG knots after watching and learning Matt from Pelagic Pursuit YouTube channel (an excellent fishing channel).
He has a great video where he shows he can tie a FG in less than a minute simply using his hands (ie. no need to tension off something else).
( YT link: https://youtu.be/2Oa-v9yT13k )
And finishing the knot with a rizzuto knot reduces the chance of the finish coming undone (but I too still like to put a small bit of UV glue on it).

That's the way I tie it too based on that Pelagic Pursuit video. Still takes me longer but it works.
What UV glue do you use and where do you buy it?

You can find it (or other brands) on E-bay (where I got it from).

Thanks for that. I'm going away next Tuesday so I can't rely on the mail but I've found some at Flyfishing Outfitters so I'll grab some from there. My previous experience with the FG has sometimes resulted in the half-hitches coming a little loose, so a Rizzuto finish and a drop of glue should see me right.

rizzuto finishing knot makes
it 2 times longer to tie . looks better . fg should only take a minute to do correctly .

True
I choose to do the rizzuto (and with quite a large number of loops, about 10 rather than the usual 5 or so) because it neatens up my knot assisting it through my tiny top guide on my jigging rod.
