Kalbarri report

Things seem  a bit quiet in Kalbarri at the moment, water temps remain below 20c and whilst those sneaking out for a quick morning fish are usually managing a feed, I havent heard of anything outstanding coming in.

There are reports of the odd bag of Tailor from Wittecarra and a couple of Soapies from the river mouth.

Still plenty of whiting and a lot of ( mostly undersized) bream coming from the river.

I have managed a feed last couple of trips out in the Mako Cat, with a guest nailing a nice Baldie yeaterday up SandPatch way, and some really Nice NW Blowies!

I am only a noob here, but the water colour is still pretty green looking compared to how I recall it previously.

There are plenty of bait congregations to be seen on the sounder whilst scouting for ground, but nothing seems to be that interested in harassing it.

4 days ago there was a lot of surface action out off Red bluff in 30m but whilst it was a nice display of the local birdlife, and the odd surface bustup, an hour of trolling and casting tin at the action resulted in nothing.

Last week a run to Wagoe in the boat resulted in nothing more that a horde of ravenous Blowies.

Chatting to some local fishos, it seems there is a feed out there if you work hard enough, but it isnt easy.

So thats about it from me, just remember, I aint no local expert, this is just my observation.

Cheers

cheers for the post. Does anything eat nw blowies or are they going to end up a scourge

Tough nuggets, Even with heavy injuries they still swim away... and sooo poisonous to dogs

A couple of local guys reckon they are good bait!

We would always cut some up and use them when we were doing it for a living, caught plenty of RE's and dhu with a big lump of that on a big circle hook.

Update

Thu, 2016-09-22 18:16

Did a quick trip out on Tuesday, the water is still very cold at 18 degrees. Nothing much happening, altho we managed one Pinkie before the wind piped up from the SW...made for an "interesting" punch back to the river mouth.

Its very quiet in Kalbarri at the moment.

A quick spin up the river yesterday resulted in a fine bag of good sized Yellowfin Whiting up to just under 30cm. ( one of my fave eating fish), lots of fun for the missus and I fishing up on the flats with super light gear.

A handful of undersized bream and a couple of small Tarwhine put in an appearance.

Reports late in the week of some very respectable Mulloway to 22kg from Frustrations, not big numbers around, but good fish, combined with these fish there are the usual "unstoppable" hookups, probably Noahs from the same spot.

Not a lot to report from offshore, despite some nice weather windows.

School holidays are getting cranked up, so my boats will most likely be staying in the yard for a couple of weeks!

Remember, the Murchison River mouth is notorious for inexperienced boaties, , Its a long way to tow your rig, and because of that, you might feel like you just HAVE to go out after all that effort and fuel.

I recommend either following a local out, or at least spending some time at the lookout watching other boats come and go. Lives have been lost on this bar in the last few years.

I am a relative noob here, and its scared me a few times already!

Good fishing!

Just spent 2 weeks up there, got back last Friday. Very quiet fishing wise. Burnt a lot of fuel for just a couple of half decent baldies, a truck load of NorWest Blowies, and some some catfish looking this down Wagoe way. Plenty of good ground but nothing biting.

Pretty poor time of the year there.

When I first saw the period for the proposed demersal ban, i was "meh, crap time of the year anyway. No fish and the wind just blows and blows". Haven't changed my views there. if you want to to take time out from boat fishing, that's when to do it.

On the other hand, getting close to when the mulloway should be about off the beach.
