Joining mono to braid
Submitted by Rodrat on Thu, 2008-11-06 18:10
Hi
Following on from the faulkners post about knots,
i was wondering what is the best knot to join braid to a mono leader.
I have tryed a few different knots with bugger all results!
What strength do most of the knots have? Cheers

I use a bimini in the braid
I use a bimini in the braid and go to an improved albright and have never had a problem.
Lots of people recommend the GT knot, but cant comment as I don't know how to do it.

Knot
Bimini in the Braid and then a GT knot works a treat....
Bimini and then a double uni works well too...

Practice
Looks like i need to buy a knot book.
How do you do a double uni to the braid? do you need to bimini the braid first?
Fishing isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more serious than that!!!

You dont have to if ya want
You dont have to if ya want a quick way to do it, then do a cairns quicky (spider hitch) then double uni, or even quicker just fold the braid in half then double uni and trim tags. My prefered is improved albright to bimini, with abit of uv knot sense for added security.

Like Brad I have never ever
Like Brad I have never ever bothered with doubles. Just a double uni knot with plenty of turns and Bobs your Aunty............... No fish, shark or snag has ever caused the join to let go.

ill use a double if i am
ill use a double if i am trolling in a serious moment (say a barra comp), also tend to lengthen the leader a bit as well.
Bit superstitious with my allbright too, 4 down 14 back, dont ask me why, just like it that way!

I cut my bimini after each
I cut my bimini after each trip anyway as it goes a bit furry after running through the guides etc.

I find that if I double the end of the braid over when tying a
double uni I get a much improved knott.

So I guess they would call that the improved double uni knot. Or the No1 knot. Cool you've got a knot named after you Col

i like the uni knot where
i like the uni knot where you double over the braid as well, but i find it still hits the guide sometimes, and after a while the braid tag end gets a bit frayed, does this happen as well? maybe it might be worth putting a dab of superglue over the braid end?
when doing the double uni with the braid folded over, how many turns for the braid and how many turns for the mono do you guys do?

superglue and UV knot sense?
whats the go with covering braid knots with superglue?
I have just put braid on my reel with 150m of mono topshot to get maximum capacity as well as abrasion resistance (guys at the shop thought i was crazy) to be used beach fishing. Now im a little paranoid about the knot giving way on a monster. Will superglue stop abrasion around the knot? and also whats UV knot sense mentioned by D_Doush?
Cheers

If your knot is strong
If your knot is strong enough.....why glue it??
Gluing is only required if you are whipping a loop onto mono for wind-on's.
What breaking strain is your braid and your mono??
If you tie it right, you should not have any problems with any knot.

both 50lb
both mono and braid is 50lb, i guess my concern is abrasion near the braid part of the knot after going through the guides under pressure repeatedly? is this likely to be an issue?

I use the glue to hold down
I use the glue to hold down the mono tag end of albrights, seems to make casting a long leader a bit more hassle free.

Cairnes quicky
I agree with Doush. For a fast rig on a boat the cairnes quicky is great for ya double braide, then a albright to the leader. 7 down 10 back, just my preference. no probs with it eva giving out. Rob

for lighter fishing i
for lighter fishing i discovered a knot called the double centauri. works on the same principle as the double uni but is far easier to tie. several books and websites also say that the centauri knot is actually slightly stronger than the uni knot. plus the total bulk of the double centauri is less than that of the doubel uni. like colin i double up the braid just by bending it around to get 2 strands, no need for tying a double beforehand
im not sure how good it would be for big game fishing as there isn't a whole lot of wraps on there, but the double centauri, and normal centauri for that matter, is probably the best knot ive tied so far

I have also been using a
I have also been using a bimini to double centauri (AKA double figure 8) for joining leaders to mainline recenty. from what i have read when joining two mono lines it acually holds about 5% more of the line strength than a bimini to improved albright (85% compared to 80% i think). The downside is that it is a slightly larger knot.
As said though I am talking about joining mono mainline to mono leader. Not quite what this post is about

go to a tackle store and buy
go to a tackle store and buy one of geoff wilsons books/bibles on fishing knots as he really knows his stuff.........has a couple and i use it often as a reference
even if you cant follow the pics it gives testing/breaking strains of variuos knots and this is invaluable when choosing a knot for a specific situation....then just get online and type in preferred knot for an animated presentation of said knot
for me a bimini with an improved albright
cuthbad......why 150m of mono topshot dude..........even 50 is way more than enuf for beach fishing.......id only have 10 to 15mtrs of mono top shot........did u want extra line capacity for big runs??????

mate when fishing using a
mate when fishing using a non return clip the cast can easily be more than 50m and repeatedly sending a non-return clip over braid is likely to cause a lot of friction and damage the braid.
I prefer using mono for this type of fishing but can only fit like 250m of 50lb mono, hence the braid backing.

Cairns Quickie
The Cairns Quickie aka Ducknose / Farkknows / Deckies knot is used to join the leader to the braid, not to form a loop. I'd reckon the knot that you're referring to is a Spider Hitch.
The Quickie is OK for jigging or bottom bouncing but not much chop for casting.
I used to use a 70 turn Bimini into a GT knot but in the last few years have gone over to a Slim Beauty.
Eliminates the double and doesn't fail. Once you've tied it a couple of times it's dead easy too.
If you google the names of the above knots you'll find tying instructions.
