For fishing wide a decent glass boat is always going to ride better than an ally boat.

Ask
Ask yourself what do you want in a boat and what do you expect from the boat. If its all well offshore stuff you will want something that can take a beating if you get caught and have to bash your way home.
If its just behind the three mile and off to Rotto a run of the mill one will suit.
BUT if the missus wants you to run her up and down the river catching tiddlers and crabs as well as the other two bits . you are in trouble because finding a boat that fits all possibilities doesn't exist, there has to be give and take and untill your mind is completely set don't rush in and buy what you think is a bargain because you will regret it.
Ask the boat owners on this site how many boats they have owned and why they have changed from their original ideas.
Myself, have owned about 8-9 of all sizes and both ali and glass qand now have a 5 metre ali that was designed for a jet and now is fitted with and outboard, just goes to tell that things change over time.

Quintrex 5.7 Legend
I have a quintrex 5.7 legend. best boat ever, particularly offshore. With 2.4m beam and the millenium hull provides a great ride in all weather. Very stable with 3 of us fishing on one side no problems. Plenty of storage room below deck as well. Take the family to rotto no problem with 5 adults on board. Got a bimini cover for the hot days that covers 75% of the boat. I also dive so plenty of room for all my gear.
Only time I get wet is if strong seabreeze side on, but that will happen with any centre console. If trimmed right nomally very dry boat.
Also lighter than fibreglass for towing.
Look for boat with 4 stoke as will give better mileage. I have 2 stroke but can still go 25nm offshore with 20% reverse fuel on return.

Ice man he said around
Ice man he said around $20000...I agree your boat sounds nice but you simply wont get one for that price.
I would always say fiberglass for offshore work. Yes some ali's like the Quintrex legend or even the barcrsuher are great but simply out of your dollars.
I'd look for a fiberglass rig, especially something like a Chivers, or there was even a nice Fraser that i saw advertsied online for around that price..
And no its not one of mine..

Cheers for the input I think
Cheers for the input I think fiberglass is winning I've been looking at 21ft centre console (Pacemaker hull) about late 80's with 1998 130hp Yamaha outboard motor spoke to the bloke and seems like a alright deal but is the motor and hull to old? And I can talk to the mechanic that services it and should i go for a private deal or someone from a marine dealership also what should I be looking for as in damage wise to the hull if there is any and same for the outboard an anyone know how easy is fiberglass to repair ?

The boat your looking at does
The boat your looking at does it have a very deep v. There is one that has floated around for years that isn't a good one and it has a Yamaha on the back. Having said that it is only one. The console is a very enclosed style that is straight up and down and has great shelter but really only for one.
If you like i would be happy to talk to regarding boats if your wanting help. I would say for sure get it checked by a independent mechanic..What area are you in?

agree with seeing rod,

since then my old boy has brought from rod and his is going well.(ally)
in regards to your boat, i would go glass but definatly not a c/c.
think about the other stuff you might do with it...overnighters,cruising around, crabbingo or just sitting back relaxing having a beer at parker point, the c/consoles arnt much good for that.
saying all that, mine is glass, but i would love to be able to walk down the sides at least.
do you have kids?
does the wife/ girl freind go out with you?
definatly a late modle engine if possible.
good luck

You wanna see a serious
Both 2 stroke / Four stroke, have their good and their bad points,
So to the chap who is looking; keep an open mind, do lots of research, your perspective of what you want in a boat will change as you investigate.
Try to get a person you trust and knows boats to give you some assistance.
Go and see together a few different boats.
Enjoy the journey!
P.S. I ordered, and just received, 5 magazines regarding buying repairing, fitting out (secondhand) boat of a website run by Jeff Webster in Queensland.
These could hopefully help you as much as they do me.
just google Jeff Webster.

Mechanical & handyman ability.
Caza have you any mechanical & handyman ability. Electrical, electronics, welding or fiberglassing experience, or are willing to learn?
If you buy an older boat and get it home, a look behind the scenes on board is where the money starts leaving the wallet.
My second boat, and I've spent nearly as much on fee's rego's etc, repairs and making it sea worthy as I have paid for it.
My thoughts are, is to be a deckie and let someone else have the expenses.

20 grand max and wide offshore.......hmmm, be careful.
Had a mate pick up a 20ft fibreglass cracker for 20k with a 150 so you can be lucky, but watch engine hours and age. Being stuck 30 km offshore with a busted engine and no VHF reception will not be fun!

I think Caza is after a Centre Console guys. Easily forgotten after so many posts though. Any reason you want a CC Caza and not a runabout style set up? I like the idea of a CC but you (or more so your deckies) can get a bit wet along the way. There are lots of boats out their in your price range that aren't CCs. This is where all the CC owners get stuck into me and defend their tubs so I'd better say - I'm not saying don't get a CC or that there is anything wrong with a CC, I'm just wondering what are the reasons you want one over other setups?
You were unlucky Adam scored a good looking CC. That looked like a good one. If you are not in a rush, I'm sure one that will suit you will pop up sooner or later.

By the sounds of it, if you
By the sounds of it, if you can get a Chivers, Pacemaker or Baron hull converted with a decent motor you will be right around the money. Get to know some freedivers, as that pretty much describes their ideal boats. My first boat was a Chivers Pursuit (17 footer) with an early 80's Johno 70hp. It could go anywhere my current 20 footer can go, and the motor was pretty decent on fuel.
Just remember that no matter what boat you get under $20k, you will need/want to spend another $3-5k in the first 6 months, whether it be elctronics, trailer refurb, engine rebuild, the list goes on. If you don't have some spare $$$ you will very quickly find yourself with a glorified trailer sitting in the driveway.

The downside of CC is getting
The downside of CC is getting wet, wetter on some, but the good points include;
* Great fishability, full walk-around.
* Low wind resistance
* Less weight than a cuddy or half cab etc
* Use less fuel because of the above two points
* Better ride because the controls are further back

Definately agree with Till on
Definately agree with Till on the pros-n-cons with a CC. I had a 5m Wahoo CC when I was an apprentice and took it everywhere - Loved it.
For a cabin style boat that would suit your budget, have a look at the Haines Hunter V17/19's. Older boats that are built very well and ride well. Im lead to believe that Evolution boats in Melbourne has the old moulds and are reproducing them??? These would obviously have a new boat price tag though!
Good luck
