Fishing tomorrow
Submitted by hlokk on Fri, 2010-09-17 16:16
Well, whether or not to go fishing tomorrow is an easy question, but where isnt quite as easy.
Wind isnt brilliant, so full ocean tinny day might be out, but perhaps duck out for some squid. Otherwise thinking breaming on the swan, go to golden ponds, or perhaps drive down to Harvey and try for some trout.
Hmmmm.
Anyways, If anyone has some ideas and wants to tag along let me know (in boat or in car depending where we go). Will have to be back by 5-6ish at the latest though.

probly not going to get one,
probly not going to get one, but if theres is no wind use a small jig and if it windy use a bigger one. becasue the squid are only small there small jigs are a good idea. which jigs do u have? because theres only a few around the better the jig the better the chance.

ive gotten a couple of hefty
ive gotten a couple of hefty buggers from the marina danno. there not all small! for me, the wind dosnt matter in which jig i use, as i can always pop it out to were i need it. try the 2.5s, but also dont hesitate with the larger jigs. also get some spike jigs for whole fish and what not, and chuck it out on a medium rod. cover all bases,

if only it wasn't a falling
if only it wasn't a falling tide all day... do you find the tides play much of a part in getting more fish?

very very average. went out
very very average. went out from hillarys, was blowin a bit, stayed inside the reef. picked up 4 squid, but bloody hard work. never got a chance to get out behind the reef as wind would die off for 5 min, then blow up again. very frustrating, but was good to meet another forumite and get out on the water anyway. Thanks Matt for the trip out and also for the helpful hints on the photography. Look forward to doin it again some time.

went out about 11
from Ocean reef. alright trip out to the 30 odd meter mark. coming in around three was a slower trip in a nit lumpy and bumpy. But how cold was the wing out there....
Only reason we came in ws we ran out of hot coffee and warm clothes....
Oh and the fact we couldn't catch a fish...
First drop of the Dawai 100 g jig resulted in a 150 g flatty.. then nothing..
That flatty was not even twice the leanght of the jig...

Well, what a
Well, what a shocker!!!
We left Mindarie at 6.45 am en-route to Mandurah.....dropping the old mans 34 ft Kevlacat back after having it for the past 3 months while he was in Broome.
Plan was to hit a heap of marks north west of Rotto on the way to the barges and if the weather permitted the Derwent to jig some Samberjacks, then on to Mandurah late in the arvo..........well.......it did not quite go to plan thanks to the wind!
Pretty rough on the way out, around 15 knot easterly, but did not slow us in the big tug. Got to some marks about 10 km north of West End rotto and did a few drifts with 4 out of the 5 on board using demersal jigs or soft plastics.......pretty fast drift and had to set the boat sideways to the wind to slow the drift to smething less than planing speed!! 150 g jigs were just holding the bottom in 40 m and 4 oz jig heads with McCarthys the same.
Daz was the star of the day, and demonstrated real angling talent, it was a pleasure to watch him....some nice shows on the sounder resulted in a few pike, followed by a nice dhu by Daz. Despite Daz bringing it up very slowly there were signs of barotrauma so he went on ice, Rosco being the happy recpient at te end of the day.
Tim VB followed with some nice BB's on bait and Matt a small one on soft plastic that was released, followed by an undersized dhu by me on soft plastic and Daz on jig, both released well.
We were all waiting for the wind to die, but it just got worse with the peak around 11 am.....must have been over 25 knots at times by the look of the tps of waved being blown off and we could not hold ground and it was getting dicey even in a 34 fter.....we turned to start a new drift and a big, very sharp set of waves breached the boat and everyone and everything went arse up, the boat feeling like it was about to turn turtle....probably felt worse than it was, but there were some anxious looking faces, with a few murmers of how hard it would be to hold onto the bottom of an upturned 34 ft cat in 25 knot wind.....we decided to bail and anchored up in Rocky Bay at Rotto for lunch.......
Seabreeze update at 1 m showed a bit of promise so we head out and things were definately better but still not good, so we hit a few more spots about 5 km off the west end of Rotto, Daz scoring his first red bight fish (actually a very large swallowtail) on jig....nice work!
Things were still grim on the wind front but at least not dangerous as it was in the morning. All thoughts of the barges were well off the cards, and the choices were to head home or cntinue to Mandurah...we chose the latter and sounded some nice ground on the way to mandurah outside the 5 fathom bank, but only resulted n a few small pinkies and seargent bakers, almost all on jig, and mostly to Daz the machine.
Finally got to Mandurah on dark, cleaned the boat, packed 5 guys and related fishig gear in the wating Landy and drove back to Mindarie to the waiting cars in the car park.....epic trip but for all the wrong reasons..........I am sure if any of us thought the wnd was going to be half the strength it turned out to be at the back of Rotto we wold not have gone out.....god help up if we were in my 17 ft Traily....I di not realise just how bad an easterly could be out wide....it seems the waves are much sharper than with a south westerly, probably because it is pushing the waves into the swell??
Anhow, thanks guys for an interesting day and for the company on a really long boat ride....and nice to meet you Daz.
