Finally some Spaniards

In Kalbarri, at least. it has been really quiet, just the odd one here and there. I got two on the Australia day weekend, and a few pinks, but worked hard for them. Sounds like a few turned up yesterday north of the river. We left on sunrise, tried a troll north a bit for zero,  and steamed a long way up. Picked up a couple of  pinkies, then started trolling again. One missed  strike on a brand new lure showed definite mackerel teeth, but it was another long stint until we finally picked up a stray. Didn't seem to have company, so we went off somewhere else. A monster double strike turned out to be YFT, dropped one released the other. Then bang bang bang , three Spaniards in quick succession, largest 13.5KG. So with four Spaniards and two pinks the fish bag was full, ( didn't have the big Madfish bag with me ) and we headed home.

Crank

Let's hope it starts cranking up for the Kalbarri Classic.

Much bait around Ranmar and what's the water temp at?

yes, did a couple of fruitless trips.

Sun, 2019-02-10 08:02

I've done two quick trolling trips since that Australia  day weekend for zero. Didn't go too far. The bait has started turning up--very little visible on the surface , but some big schools and lots of little scattered baitballs showing up. I did hear someone on the radio calling another boat over into some activity on the surface yesterday.  The water temps went nuts on Monday of the AD weekend, it was over 26deg up north, and it pushed down towards the river. Then went cold again. but around 24 deg now, which is a good start here for mackerel.

yes, bloody tuna   they certainly go hard, just a disappointment when you are hoping for mackerel. And hard to manage if you intend to release--i managed to get a gaff into his lower jaw and Wicked-Tuna'd him through the transom door. He  swam off quick. If there are a lot of them around, I tend to go to single hooks on the lures, release them off the swim board. No point dmaging them if you don't want them.

About that retirement....

Sun, 2019-02-10 20:03

Sort of a semi retirement. Working more than I meant to, in bursts, casual. Someone asked me the other day if I had bought the boat I had talked about, and why was I still working?   My answer was along the lines of" the boat makes me very happy. I am even more happy when I earn enough to use the boat as much as I want. I consider this a work-life balance"

Well done Ranmar. It seems like the Macks came later in the morning? What time did you get them. I am busy sorting my gear for a post April school holidays visit. Can't wait.

I got nothing early...

But that may have me just being in the right place.? They were certainly striking aggressively near midday. I normally prefer morning or late afternoon, but there you go.
